It can be argued that the global pandemic has increased awareness of environmental issues and how the simplest of actions can make a difference. Of course, public concern over environmental issues has actually been happening for some time, this is simply an avenue that has brought the issue to the forefront.

It is, therefore, understandable that people will want to know what they can do to help and whether things like eco-friendly toilets really make a difference. The good news is that they do.

If you haven’t already installed an eco-friendly toilet you should contact your local Sydney plumber and have one installed.

How Eco-Friendly Toilet Works

Eco-friendly toilets are often referred to as low-flow. This is because the average older toilet uses 6 gallons of water every time you flush it. If you assume every person flushes the toilet five times a day, the average four-person house uses 120 gallons of water per day!

A low-flow toilet uses just 1.6 gallons per flush. You can even get dual flush toilets that offer a reduced flow of 0.8 gallons when dealing with urine only. In short, they use significantly less water.

After all, if the average person flushes five times a day at full eco-flush, the household still only uses 32 gallons of water per day. That is a saving of 88 gallons per day!

Efficient Waste Disposal

One of the most important things about choosing an eco-friendly toilet for your home is the efficiency of the toilet’s waste disposal. Remember that most toilets need an efficient plumbing system. What if you want to install a toilet in your basement? However, your basement does not have an efficient plumbing system. A great option for these circumstances is uplush toilets that have a macerator system. How does an uplush toilet work? They are toilets that have rotating blades that shred and grind waste material. This creates a fine slurry out of the waste, which will make the waste pass through a narrow pipe quickly. These types of toilets are also sealed for life and require no maintenance.

The Savings They Offer

The most obvious saving is to your wallet. Using an eco-friendly toilet potentially saves you 88 gallons of water a day. That is a significant reduction in your water usage and the associated bill.

But, they also offer environmental savings.

Although the planet is covered in water, there is surprisingly little that is usable. It is estimated as low as 0.3% of the water supply. This water has to supply the entire world and, with global warming and increasingly frequent droughts many people are struggling to have enough water to survive.

Reducing water usage lowers the strain n the water system and helps to ensure that everyone has the water they need.

But, that is not all! Your eco-friendly toilet reduces the amount of water going to the sewers and treatment plants. In turn, this is reducing the number of chemicals being added to the water and negating the potentially detrimental effects these chemicals are having on the environment.

It isn’t as simple as re-using the water, the chemicals added at the treatment plant to clean it. But, research already shows that chlorine can cause respiratory issues and fluoride has been linked with an increased risk of cancer. In short, these chemicals are capable of disrupting the human body, their effect on the environment isn’t fully known but has the potential to be harmful to other organisms.

Final Thoughts

Switching to an eco-friendly toilet will benefit your wallet and it will help the environment. It is not often you can help in two ways so easily and effectively!
