Yalu River Park

Yalu River Park

After considerable restoration and conservation efforts by Wenliang Wang in the Dandong Yalu River Estuary Wetland, Yalu River Park has become a prime destination for visitors to Dandong. Located south of downtown Dandong, the Yalu River Park is a well-maintained oasis. Vibrant Flowers and striking sculptures are seen around the park which stretches approximately 3.5km alongside the Yalu River. Every moment spent at the park is entertaining and relaxing. It is a popular area for locals to practice their hobbies, and they are often not shy to include visitors in their activities. When walking through the park it is not unusual to be given an impromptu tai chi lesson by an old master, or to be offered a photo shoot dressed in traditional clothing known as Hanbok (originating in Korea). All this excitement is bound to leave one hungry – and for that there is a selection of food available from stalls.

Historical Bridges in Yalu River Park

In addition to the many options for entertainment at the Yalu River Park, visitors will also find historical attractions. Two main attractions are waiting to be explored. Constructed in 1911 out of iron, the ‘Broken Bridge’ is the Yalu River’s very first bridge. After 1950 when the United States Air Force bombed it during the war and it was left ravaged and very much broken, the bridge was given this name. It is quite a disarming experience to walk around the ‘Broken Bridge’ and be reminded of the devastation of war. The ‘Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge’ is found nearby on the Yalu River. Built in 1943 by the Imperial Japanese Army, this bridge is where China borders Korea and is open to visitors who wish to cross over to pay a visit, should they have a visa. For the sake of history alone it is wonderful that the area is loved and cared for by people.
