Grass May Reduce Global Warming

Although you can't actually hear a cow burp they are constantly releasing methane. When they digest grass, micro flora in their gut breaks down. Methane is the majority of what is burped up, a contributing factor in greenhouse gases. Scientists from a plant breeding research center in Australia are developing a new kind of grass that has been tested in the lab and glasshouses and are now planning field trials. Farmers should be able to maintain their dairy herds, productivity and profitability while cutting down gassy burps and reducing their contribution to global warming.

The dairy industry definitely has an impact on greenhouse gas emissions and Britain's target is to cut them by 20% by 2010. The goal is to have 20-30% of milk producers trying out new technology to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the year 2015.

There is some controversy about the breakdown process of the new grass and if it in fact will reduce methane. A lecturer in farm animal health says that a diet too rich in highly digestible carbs can actually increase the amount of methane a cow belches out. And a professor of animal science says more digestible forage could push up a cows absolute methane emissions but productivity gains would mean less methane per unit of milk.

As long as this new technology remains new, I am sure there are some kinks that need to be worked out. If it pans out, it could really help the reach their greenhouse gas reduction goals in the UK and around the world.

Veal: Causes Greenhouse Gases?

Producing one kilo of cut veal produces as much greenhouse gas emissions as traveling 137 miles by car. However, meat from non ruminants turns out to be more environmentally friendly.

According to a study by a Swiss environmental ratings agency in 2007, The US group Tyson Foods produces nearly as much greenhouse gas emissions as a major car manufacturer. The full life cycle of products of producing veal was taking into account which included items like forest clearance for grazing land, emissions from cattle feed,

meat processing and the large amounts of methane naturally produced by cattle.

VEAL IS NOT GOURMET!

Veal may be more appealing to some while looking over a menu because it's known to be a "gourmet" meat and also it's low in fat. During the young calves brief lives, they never see the sun or touch the Earth. They never see or taste the grass. Their bodies are anemic to get the desired pale look. Their muscles ache for freedom and exercise.

The real issue is the calves experience. I want people to be aware of these innocent baby cows that are put through these conditions and are seen in everyday life as tender cutlets. As a former waitress at an Italian restaurant I noticed veal was an important menu item and popular choice by lots of people. I'm ashamed to have once served it after learning more about all the down falls of producing it and eating it.

EPA blocks California's Emissions Waiver

Since the decision was made by the Environmental Protection Agency to block any efforts of California's attempt to regulate greenhouse gases, a rage of fury from environmentalists has commenced. The EPA has essentially told the states that they cannot regulate their own tailpipe emissions due to the fact that global warming is a global problem that needs a global solution, rather than a few states trying to implement laws. However, thirteen other states have also adopted or are poised to adopt California’s emission reduction program: Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont.

The EPA is holding back states that are trying to lead the country in a positive direction to help curb global warming. Now the Western Environmental Law Center (WELC) and four other non-profits are filing a lawsuit against the EPA for its baseless decision. California has basis to protect the health and well being of its citizens under the Clean Air Act and intends to move forward with the issue.

One of the most upsetting factors about the whole situation is that the EPA is an agency that has no accountability to the people since they are not elected officials. However, it is imperative that we voice our opinions in matters like these...so if you disagree with the EPA decision then I encourage you to sign this petition here and make your voice heard.

Global Carbon Tax?

Would you support the first ever worldwide tax called the Global Carbon Tax? It doesn't exist, but it is being talked about among some EU members and some corporations around the world. How would such a tax be implemented? Is it ethical? Would the tax be justified?

Digg!

As much as I love the environment and believe that something must be done before we destroy our planet, I am completely against a worldwide global carbon tax. It is especially unfair to third world countries who are the victims of first world pollution and greenhouse gases. Nevertheless there are many supporters of a carbon tax of some sort whether it is city wide, industry wide, or statewide. Some prominent global leaders are awaiting the successor to the Kyoto Treaty which hasn't done very much to mitigate harmful effects of climate change. One could argue that the effects of climate change are now being seen with odd and extreme weather across the world.

Most companies, including Barclays, advocate a global carbon tax, and are, somewhat optimistically, waiting for a successor to the Kyoto Protocol that includes such a move. -climatechangecorp.com

Establishing a global market for carbon by setting a value on carbon in the market might be way to handle the issue.

Europe already has a system like this called the European Union’s Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS). The scheme covers almost 30 countries and 40 billion euros worth of emissions are allocated to it. The scheme is getting some influence from some transactions that have occurred in the US and in Asia so I speculated that this will truly become an international system given enough time.

My guess is that if their were a global carbon tax, it would be governed by the United Nations. The research they conduct on climate change with the International Panel on Climate Change (IPPC), have findings that suggest global turmoil by the end of next century if nothing is done. Their most probable excuse for trying to implement such a tax would be "A global problem requires a global tax", or something to that end. Once again, I cannot ever support something like this, would their be a vote? There are far too many questions surrounding the administering of such a tax. I think that if people do care about something like this, then they should vote on it on a state by state system in the US.

For now, there is no such thing as a global carbon tax, but perhaps this issue will get more media attention in the near future.

New Atlas changes for Climate Change

It would only make sense that we must update our atlas's and maps every so often. But due to the extensive effects of climate change, some drastic changes will be added to the new Times Atlas. For example, Lake Chad in Africa was 95% larger back in 1963 than it is now! Many other examples like this are taking place all over the world. Soon perhaps the worst effects of global warming will be soon to come since the worldis too slow to act on such an important issue. Share this article by clicking the Mash Button.

Green Hotels popularity soars with Global Warming

The popularity of so called "Green Hotels" has seen a rise in recent times due to growing concerns about global warming. The issue has been a hot topic of discussion in the political realm as well as the scientific realm. Many people say that science and politics don't really go well together and I would absolutely have to agree with that. Nonetheless, I have just recently learned of these hotels and am obliged to see they actually tailor to a certain eco-conscious crowd. Why not anyways, a hotel can probably save quite a bit of money by trying to save energy. Watch this video:

Just off the top of my head I can think of a few ways that hotels can save money and go "green" while doing it. For example, everyone knows that hotels do a lot of laundry, so why not invest in energy star laundry machines and dryers. Another easy thing to do would be to set the automatic thermostat a little higher, as they are always set for a cool 70...so why not 73 or 74, its not that much of a difference and saves money. The hotel can purchase a radiant barrier called HeatBloc-75. It is a film that goes on the roof and blocks up to 75% of the sun's rays resulting in less heat to cool down in summer months and a smaller energy bill. Anyways, if you care about the environment enough that when you see an advertisement for "green hotels", give it a try and let me know how the experience went. I will definitely do so myself if I stay in one in the future.

Peak Oil and War

The authors of a new study warn that food and water shortages that could potentially be caused by global warming could spark wars. The study conducted, evaluated the history and correlation between war and climate change between the years 1000AD and 1911AD. The study was published in the August 2007 issue of Human Ecology which reviewed 899 wars fought by China during the time period mentioned. The study found that the occurrence of war was in sync with times of agricultural problems due to climate changes.

Also, a report was released by several top retired military officials in the U.S. back in April that warned that global warming was a national security threat. They predicted war over water, and various other problems due to rising sea levels. It is true that global warming will in fact benefit some regions while hurting others. For example, the northern hemisphere will experience better farming conditions due to warmer conditions while the tropical regions will experience more severe weather patterns.

And finally, there is a group of scientists who fear that we are about to experience worldwide peak oil between 2008 and 2018. Once peak oil does occur, the world will never be able to produce as much oil as it once did. Scientists have studied the peak oil issue for some time and say they all seem to have a different prediction model. Some scientists believe that by the time the world realizes it has reached peak oil, industrialized nations will have already begun to wage wars against other nations for the dwindling remains of oil. Imagine waking up to CNN or FOX news to hear that the world has reached peak oil…the gas prices at the pump would literally sky rocket.

Possible Solution: We need to urge our governments to support alternative fuels and renewable energy. The only way we can do that is to write letters, join campaigns, and spread information. Drive fuel efficient vehicles or conserve as much energy at home as possible. All these things combined will be able to produce a positive reaction. Cheers.

New Study Hits Climate Skeptics

Scientists say new alaysis counters claims that the sun's changing energy levels cause global warming. These new findings add to a growing body of evidence that human activity, not natural causes, lies behind rising average world temperatures. While many scientists now acknowledge this, a small group of skeptics argue that phenomena like solar flares on the sun's surface are causing global warming.

I have written a blog post about the theory that Global Warming is not caused by man but by the Sun. There is a documentary called the Global Warming Swindle that tries to address the issue. Watching it made me realize that there are many different sides to the story. I still believe now that man is causing the "Earth Changes" or more widely known as climate change that we are experiencing now to some degree.

In my opinion there too much evidence to prove that the planet is warming and climate patterns are changing. Regardless of how you feel on the issue watch the short video clip below and decide for yourself.

Desalination Plants on the Rise

The French utility services group Veolia has won a contract worth 702 million Euros (945 million dollars) to design and build a water desalination plant in Saudi Arabia. The plant is expected to be completed by 2010 and will produce 800,000 cubic meters of water per day. Saudi Arabia already produces 24% of the total world capacity of freshwater using desalination.

Desalination refers to a process that removes excess salt from water to make it suitable for consumption by animals, humans, and/or irrigation. Desalination plants are generally very expensive and require heavy infrastructure compared to the costs of filtering or treating freshwater from rivers or wells.

More and more countries facing extreme drought conditions are looking towards desalination as a last hope for a source of freshwater. For example, Australia is in the process of building a $3.1 billion dollar desalination plant which will cost $140 million dollars a year to run and is expected to be completed by 2011. As climate change continues to alter the weather in such a way that it creates extreme drought conditions, desalination plants will be a last hope for fresh water in certain parts of the world.

There are environmental impacts with desalination plants that should be considered as well. Marine life really takes a hit when desalination plants are built due to the ocean water intakes. Plankton, fish eggs, and fish larvae can potentially be destroyed by as much as 90% when desalination plants are not designed to protect them due to increase in costs and decrease in output potential.

The decline of ancient civilizations in Mesopotamia, the Mediterranean region, Pre-Columbian southwest U.S. and Central America is believed to have been strongly influenced by natural resource degradation from non-sustainable farming and forestry practices.

Possible Solution: Sustainable Agriculture
1) Improve water conservation and storage measures
2) Providing incentives for selection of drought-tolerant crop species
3) Use reduced-volume irrigation systems
4) Manage crops to reduce water loss
5) Rain Capturing Systems

Fox News Attacks the Environment

I just recieved an update from The Sierra Club organization about Fox News. Apparently The Sierra Club is campaigning in trying to raise awareness on the tactics that Fox News uses to misinform the public with regards to Global Warming.

In the press release, they link to a website called FoxAttacks.com which has a very sweet video that I've also embedded below. You can also sign a petition that is trying to get companies that claim to be environmentally friendly such as Home Depot and yet still advertise on Fox News. Essentially, this whole issue is about boycotting Fox News and anyone who supports it. I personally hate Fox News, or any national news network for that matter...because in my opinion, they feed nothing but lies and misinformation in general with regards to major two sided issues...and also because Bill O' Riley is on that channel...enough said.

According to The Sierra Club:

"In recent months, presidential candidates John Edwards, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Bill Richardson, and Chris Dodd have all refused to appear in Fox-sponsored debates because of the increasing consensus that Fox is not a legitimate news organization."

So I urge you fellow readers to support this cause and also try to consider watching CNN or getting your news from me instead of Fox...haha, but seriously if you like my blog please sign up for email updates on the sidebar. Also if you haven't watched it, I recommend a very good documentary on the Fox News Network called OutFoxxed. If you have Netflix, you can order it there, but if you don't look it up and consider watching it...if you happen to still be reading but love Fox News...reconsider your opinion about them after watching OutFoxxed. Cheers.

San Francisco bans bottled water for city staff

Gavin Newsom, the mayor of San Francisco has given city workers an executive order to ban bottled water due to their wasteful nature. San Francisco will no longer spend city funds on bottled water in favor of tap water, which the city claims is better than bottled water. The city estimates it will save $500,000 a year from this act alone. According to San Francisco, the price of one gallon of bottled water is enough to purchase 1000 gallons of tap water! In fact the amount of resources it takes to create the plastic for bottled water is astonishing.

Get all the facts about how bottled water is wasteful here.

Besides saving money, Gavin Newsom says this executive order also addresses environmental concerns in the amount of oil used to make bottled water and the transportation of the products.

This order comes at a time when San Francisco was the first city in the Nation to outright ban plastic bags from grocery stores to help curb global warming and to reduce city littering. Read more about that in my previous post back in March here.

In my opinion, while these measures seem a bit extreme...they are also forcing people to realize that we live in a society that is very wasteful. These measures force people to conserve resources and use what's available to them.

Native American Tribes Speak out about Climate Change

Members from 6 tribes in the United States attended a meeting last month with the United Nations called "Indigenous Perspective on Climate Change." The consensus within the native American community about climate change is that humans have caused quite a bit of pollution that is now being visibly seen. They refer to our planet as Mother Earth and view climate change or global warming as Mother Earth's defiant nature in getting even with those who have offset the balances. For those that believe in the Gaea theory, the notion that Earth is a living organism that will do whatever necessary to sustain itself, this holds true.

As a way to fight back against climate change, some tribes in California, Minnesota, and New Mexico have taken their casino profits and used them to fund renewable energy projects. The native Americans have always had a saying which stated to use nature respectfully, never taking more than is needed. They truly believe that Mother Earth is beginning a "cleansing" to eradicate the population explosion which has taken so much more than given back. Are we as a society at that tipping point yet? Perhaps we may be soon...but only time will tell.

Thunder? It's the sound of Greenland melting

It's too early in the year to see icebergs crumple regularly but the sound is a reminder. As politicians squabble over how to act on climate change, Greenland's ice cap is melting, and faster than scientists had thought possible. If the ice cap melted entirely, oceans would rise by 23 feet, flooding New York and London, and drowning island nations.

Greenland is melting

Greenland experienced more days of melting snow and at higher altitudes in 2006 than the average over the past 18 years. This could be a sign that might soon begin to severely threaten the globe. The research project was funded by NASA satellite photo imagery and sensors which can detect the electromagnetic signals that naturally radiate off the ice sheet. It actually allows for the daily monitoring of melting snow. Whether or not this is a big issue or not, my message as a blogger is don't panic, but don't be a consumer whore either as drive gas guzzlers unless there is a need for it. Ya know all the usual things...one thing I do when I first come to work is turn off all the lights people aren't using but carelessly leave on everyday. Even though its not my electric bill, the fact is that the energy partially comes from dirty power plants. Its just one thing I always try to do. Anyways...here's the article in case you wanted to reference it. Cheers. :)

An Alternative View of Global Warming

the sunI must admit that I have been reluctant to accept a new theory or reason behind global warming that wasn't contributed to by greenhouse gases. The reason for not "converting" was due to lack of any information...perhaps this information was suppressed, but now is out. This article and the embedded video below have convinced me otherwise a global scam and questions the Global Warming mantra being corn fed into the public's mindset. This story has CONSPIRACY written all over it, and it brings up a lot of questions. I, for one, feel that I should re-design this blog to a more broader sense of concern for the environment...instead of perpetuating the global warming agenda...being that mankind is at fault for global warming. Saying this, I DO still believe that big industry should be held accountable for their carbon dioxide emissions due to their harmful effect on the environment...but I strongly disagree with a government aimed at controlling people with an excuse of saving thenasa sun pic planet. I DO support alternative energy and reducing our foreign dependence on oil...and yes I even drive a hybrid. By no means am I saying that greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide are not factors in our warming, but merely that they may not be the only reason. For reasons of not wanting to side with one agenda or another, I will change my stance to that of a neutral one, and merely use my blog to report the environmental changes of our current warming, regardless of how that is actually happening, while at the same time promoting Alternative Energy and conservation.

To that end...other scientists that have data that can explain a different theory for our current global warming...MUST NOT be discounted and SHOULD be heard. Various scientists speaking against the MAINSTREAM theory have received death threats and have been ridiculed and deemed as low as Holocaust deniers. When attacks such as these begin to emerge...it should make one think of a reason for them. Article about the death threats

Reference Article: Mars, Jupiter, and other Planets also experiencing Global Warming

So scientists and astronomers have noticed that the Earth is heating up, but so are Mars, Pluto, and other world's in our solar system...leading scientists to believe that the sun is the cause of global warming, not human induced carbon dioxide emissions.

While there is evidence to suggest that solar activity such as solar flares and sun spots can affect climate on Earth, many climate scientists and astrophysicists agree that the global warming we are experiencing now is attributed to man. Regardless of whether or not man is contributing to global warming, I still believe there should be a push to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and that people should conserve their energy consumption. This is my my two cents for the day...

San Franciso trying to ban plastic bags to curb Global Warming

cloth hand bagSo this strikes me as off the wall, yet a necessary step to bring awareness of the consumer Nazi ways of the American public. The plastic we so frivolously use is created from oil...therefore all the plastic products you buy, is really contributing to global warming and contributing to foreign dependence on oil at the same time...a two-fer! . Many of the products that we use today and take for granted are made through processes that utilize petrochemicals, and a main in ingredient in these chemicals is oil, hence the prefix petro. So San Francisco is trying to force grocery stores to completely eliminate the use of plastic bags and force people to use either paper bags made from recycled material or cloth hand bags.

Some stores around the country already impose a charge of 5 cents per bag for using plastic bags, and villages across Alaska already ban them as well. Other countries around the world including Taiwan, Ireland, and South Africa already have similar discouragement of plastic bag use, but San Francisco would be the first city in the nation to impose such laws. The city also said that eliminating the plastic bags would also help curb litter and help stop choking wildlife. The new law would also impose fines for grocery stores that refuse to comply. I believe this is a great first step for a city trying to make a difference. The fact is, people end up just throwing these bags away instead of recycling them. Most people have a complete disregard for their waste, and its time people take into consideration ways of reducing their waste by re-using and recycling more. I give a two thumbs up for this new legislation...just my two cents.

Inuit (Eskimos) take case of Global Warming to Human Rights Commission

inuit eskimos iglooThe natives of the northern hemisphere called the Inuit or more commonly known as the Eskimos have been feeling the changes in climate for the past decade. They feel that the United States is to blame for global warming due to them releasing one quarter of the worlds carbon dioxide emissions. Experienced hunters are now falling through thin ice because they cannot tell of melted ice from warmer oceans on the under side. The animals they have hunted for years are migrating north in search of ice which is becoming more stressful on the indigenous people of the arctic. These people are now using air conditioners for the first time because their homes are heated by the increasingly warmer sunlight temperatures 24 hours a day. Some can no longer build their homes from snow due to the melting going on. One thing is sure to the Inuit people, and that is the climate is changing for them at a rapid pace, and they want the rest of the world to know.

Google, Gap, PG&E,and others Pledge to fight Global Warming

Google, Gap Inc, PG&E and other local San Francisco businesses have pledged to fight global warming. They said they want to make the Bay Area a leader in fighting Global Warming. Google has already contributed by installing 9200 solar panels at its headquarters in Mountain View, California, accounting for 30% of its energy uses. (Read Article Here). The companies formed a group named the Business Council on Climate Change, in which it was hoping to attract businesses to help set an example to the rest of corporate America. PG&E, a San Francisco based utility, provides electricity for most of Northern California, is committed to help curb global warming by generating half of its electricity from clean renewable sources. The fight is on, and as long as companies like these are leading the way, the people of the United States can make the difference if the government should choose not to.

3 million fish suffocates due to Drought in Columbia

1320 tons of dead tilapia have suffocated in a southern Columbian reservoir in a recent four month drought. dead and suffocated tilapiaThis equates to approximately 3 million fish that didn't have enough oxygen to breath due to a drought that has caused the water levels in the reservoir to shrink drastically. The levels of water have decreased by 86 feet in recent months. The local fish industry has lost an estimated $2 million worth of exports to the US and Europe. This is just another classic example of how climate change is affecting people in different parts of the world. Just as predicted the "side effects" of climate change can be seen through examples like this. Al Gore and the rest of the scientific community are right on when they say to expect tragedies such as wide spread drought, and more severe storms.
