It drains the top soil of anything good and thus causes us to use ammonia, nitrates, and phosphates to get the soil back to the right nutrient level to grow anything else on it. This is a huge problem which leads to things like soil erosion, chemical pollution, and the depletion of what little top soil we have on this planet.
