Staycations are wonderful for the entire family. I'm really happy you posted this for everyone to understand the value that staycations provide. The best things in life are truly free and there's no point in going on a vacation if you don't have the money for it, which most people don't. We're doing that this summer here in NW British Columbia. We generally drive across the country each year to visit our family (the best choice for a familly of 6), but now we're cutting back to every other year.

There’s a great video on San Francisco I Am where hundreds of teens in the Bay Area ditched their video games at home and headed for the biggest green festival in the nation. The Festival was held in San Francisco and the kids learned AND taught one another about climate change and green jobs. Even Chuck D from Public Enemy was there.

I agree with Adam I think most of us think seriously only when it pinches our pocket. Very few of them would think about saving energy or fuel if it was cheaper.
But "Staycation" is a great idea. I surely am going for it.

My parents used to do this with us, but we lived in Las Vegas, so there was always tons for us to do.... but it was more because we were poor, than to save the environment, but I guess we did help to save the environment a little bit.

@Adam, that is so true, no more than a tiny fraction of people do the right thing because it is the responsible and the correct thing to do, most will do it if it benefits themselves in a particular way. For instance i have to confess that i bought an EV not so much because it is good for the environment but because it costs me practically nothing to drive.

I've maintained for a long time that the only way people are going to do the right thing (lower their dependency on fossil fuels)is not out of environmental or consumer guilt, not because it will help the environment, but because it hurts their pocket books. Hopefully while they are at home during their staycations, they will decide to do the write things for the write reasons.

You might be thinking about getting some reusable bags for awhile, but the fact that the convenience of free plastic bags really builds up a habit of hard to kick. Well, now you have no more reason to keep you from using reusable bags. As the website name said, you can get free reusable bags from them, the bags are not your normal boring looking reusable bags, they're like designer bags, very stylish and functional. I was kind of skeptical at first, but after I received my bags in less than week, I'm now a big believer, and happy to be playing my role in saving planet earth.

Good idea . . . still, even the Sierra Club is worried about the loss of the American Family Vacation (see "Are We There Yet?" at Sierra Magazine). "Where will the next generation of conservationists come from if we don't show our kids the wilderness?" -- so the question goes.

Our solution is far from perfect, but it is a start, with the best current technologies and solutions, to be able to keep your summer vacation, but do it more responsibly.
