How You Can Reduce Your Building Site’s Carbon Footprint

More and more companies are becoming conscious of the environmental issues related to their work. It should then come as no surprise that construction firms and development companies are also concerned about how they can become more eco-friendly and carbon neutral.

By the nature of the job, construction building sites are just not very carbon neutral, a vast amount of supplies are needed to build a site. All the required material must be transported by quite a large transport vehicles over the course of the building period.

Going green with new construction doesn’t always have to be an unsustainable act against humanity. Companies can choose to build LEED certified buildings which are categorized into 4 levels that grade water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, sustainable sites, materials and resources, and indoor environmental quality. Based on the points you get, you can be certified as LEED certified, silver, gold, or platinum. LEED certification started in the United States by the U.S. Green Building Council with the intention of inspiring real estate, construction, engineering, and architectural industries to create environmental awareness and green design into buildings that are more sustainable than conventional. LEED certifications are in more than 7000 building across the United States and in 30 other countries since it started in 1998.

Going beyond LEED certification, there is a new standard that could eventually be as normal today as a LEED certified building in a few years. It’s called the Living Building Challenge. It’s a challenge to inspire designers to create a building that is net zero energy and net zero waste and should set aside land for habitat restoration, collect and use rain water without waste, and many other very strict guidelines on sourcing local raw materials etc.

As a building site foremen in a construction company, we have green tips for you too:

• Utilize eco-friendly generators that dramatically reduce the amount of carbon they set into the air during the duration of use.
• Schedule delivery supplies to be delivered only when needed.
• Be conscious of supplies, double check measurements when making cuts so that fewer materials are wasted. Don’t forget to recycle any waste if possible.
• Don’t leave work lights on or tools running longer than necessary to operate to get the job done.

These are just a few examples of ways to work towards reducing some of the massive amounts of carbon that many building sites could release into the air. By putting any of these practices in place, many building and construction companies will be able to make steps towards reducing their carbon footprint.

This is something that will not only be able to be advertised as a benefit of the company, but it will also draw in potential customers who are concerned with reducing carbon footprints. And that is something that can actually matter to many potential clients and customers.

Although actively reducing carbon footprints might be something a little difficult for construction firms to do, certainly baby steps can be taken in order to make a difference as a whole within the industry.
