Dating can be awkward, uncomfortable, and just downright rough. If you’ve ever let your friends convince you to go on a blind date and wanted to run for the hills, then you know what I’m talking about. But these days, online sources like social media and dating sites have taken some of the awkward silence away from a bad first date. The great thing about online dating tools is that they allow you to compare interests with others before meeting them in person. At least you will somewhat know what to expect when you meet for that coffee date.

Dating as a green chic/guy can be even more challenging though. If you are highly devoted to the eco lifestyle, chances are it’s important that you find someone that is too. For instance, say you work for a non-profit wildlife rehabilitation organization and on your spare time you participate in beach clean ups and attend local community meetings, having a partner that supports your ethics and moral values is likely going to be pretty important to you. I mean after all, they will be the one to have to hear what your day was like at work and tag along on your extra-curricular green friendly excursions.

The worst thing for a relationship is to have someone who doesn’t share any of your passions and debates all the things you believe in.  If you’re a vegan and frequently petition for the cruelty of animals on factory farms, how hard would it be to watch your boyfriend scarf down a ribeye steak like a heartless meat eating carnivore? I’m not saying that those kinds of relationships don’t work out, I’m sure some do but opposites don’t always attract. Sometimes opposite interests can cause a relationship to struggle and ultimately fail. Speaking from personal experience, being with someone completely opposite from you can be tough especially when you disagree on major issues. This also goes for things like kids, marriage, religion, life goals etc.

For right now, let’s just focus on green-minded individuals looking for love. If you are an environmentally conscious person and want to share your life with someone who empathizes with your outlook, than you might want to consider some of these green dating sources. I’ve compiled what I felt were the top three best dating outlets that you might want to give a try.

Planet Earth Singles- This dating site is aimed at helping your average holistic, vegetarian, raw foodist, animal rights activist and yoginis (people that love yoga?) find a date. You can join for free and test drive the site.

Green Singles- This website blossomed from a newsletter (created by a sweet looking old couple) in the 1980’s into a comprehensive dating website today. It boasts 15,000 members and has a myriad of testimonials. If you are a punk rock hipster or a more refined activist this could be where you find your future wife/husband.

Green Speed Dating- I know speed-dating sounds a little intimidating but the reviews on this particular west coast experience are great. The California based company holds monthly events that seem to be geared towards the cool eco urbanite. The sessions are held in fancy wineries or bars and would appeal to the fashion oriented, prius driving, and media savvy individual. If you are a young green entrepreneur, this could be just the place for you to meet someone with a like mind. You will meet with 10-20 people for 3 minutes each and the $25 fee will go straight towards the Solar School Project, which aims at bringing a solar community to people in rural Nicaragua.

Don’t be afraid to take a dip in the green dating pool. I highly encourage you to get your feet wet with some of these sites and see what happens!
