Bikes and Health: What Can We Learn from Europe? Infographic

One of the reasons bicycle riding in Europe is higher than in US is because EU countries often make driving more inconvenient. Gas prices are higher and so are taxes for everything from the car to registration and insurance. EU countries also incentivize bicycle riding by giving out tax credits to people who want to purchase a new bike – thus encouraging more bicycle trips. It also helps that many EU countries like Denmark, The Netherlands, Germany, etc all have extensive investments in bicycle infrastructure that promotes increased usage while maintaining safe distances from automobile traffic.
The last part of the infographic gives an indication that Portland, Oregon is well on its way to capitalize on increased bicycle usage through the investments for bicycles infrastructure. In addition, the city of Portland puts forth a lot of effort into branding the city as bicycle friendly through policies, marketing, and its transportation department.
All in all, I personally like the contrast this infographic shows when we look at the big picture in terms of cars vs bikes and everything in between. What do you guys think of it?
