Super Model Gisele Bundchen Wins Greenest Celebrity Award

From Versace, Dolce and Gabbana, and Victoria’s Secret to being the wife of Tom Brady, Gisele Bundchen is undoubtedly the most recognized supermodel around today. She has graced MANY magazine covers of the most prestigious labels and modeled a myriad of tiny bikinis in hundreds of Victoria’s Secret catalogs. What could make this girl more special? Well she happens to have an amazing passion for the environment and is a true activist.

Just last week she was awarded Greenest Celebrity at the 2011 International Green awards at the National History Museum of London. Not only does she have beauty and fame but she has a big heart and love for environmental issues. What’s not to admire about this girl?

Each year the Green Awards honors a celebrity who has been the most creative and innovative in the approach of sustainability of the environment. An online public vote took place and Gisele was the clear winner beating Former Beatles Paul McCartney and Miguel Bose. Not many people would think of the supermodel as an environmental activist but she has been a great example for her fans and has brought some important issues to light in the world. She initially became a green activist when she witnessed the effects of deforestation and water pollution in the Xingu River. Gisele also has used her flip-flop line to promote awareness about environmental issues she cares about and also help raise funds to sponsor environmental projects, particularly forest and water related projects in the Amazon and the Atlantic Rainforest. A few other amazing causes she has campaigned for is the Clean Water Project in 2008 in her hometown of Horizontina as well as the Drop of Water Movement which aspires to prevent the construction of the Bel Monte Dam in Brazil. If this dam were to be built it would destroy roughly 160 thousand acres of the Amazonian rainforest and not just that but would take the Indians out of their homes as well. Other than designing footwear to raise awareness, Gisele has also dedicated a part of her website to environmental issues. She launched a “green” blog in 2008 with the tag line ‘here the fashion is to be responsible.’ She was also designated the Goodwill ambassador for the United Nations in 2009.

I can’t think of another celebrity that is consistently taking steps at helping our environment. She is a true environmentalist in her own right and definitely deserves this award. Gisele commented “I am blessed to have grown up in a family that embraced the importance of nature and community coexisting in harmony. My career in the public eye has given me the opportunity to raise awareness about important socio-environmental causes in hopes of promoting a more conscious relationship with our environment.”

She was not the only winner that night. Other categories included Best Green International Business Award, Best Green Government Award and Best Green New Product Innovation.

This year Gisele’s main focus is on the sustainable management of the world in the fight against climate change. Gisele is truly helping the world take notice of the importance of protecting our planet. Her current theme is “I manage the world in a Sustainable way.”

I think more celebrities need to utilize their fame for the better good of the environment and people. If you have that kind of power in the media why not use it? I tip my hat off to this woman for being an admirable example of how we can make a difference in the world.
