Fine Wine Stored in Paper Bottles

Classy and Compostable

The knowledge about resource depletion and human-caused climate change has caused many to change their ways. People are buying solar garage doors, changing from traditional gas-powered cars to hybrids and electrics, and even using reusable shopping bags at the grocery store. More and more areas of our lives are easily greened, and many are jumping on the bandwagon and doing their part. However, sometimes being green isn’t super sexy. For example, take the humble compost pile, which is still a great thing to do.

So, what about fine wine in a paper bottle? Most people associate the words “paper” and “wine” with those poor quality wines that come from a cardboard box, but what if you could get a fine, elegant wine in a paper container that was classy and green, as well? The company GreenBottle is hoping that doing just this will catch on, and so far, the results have been positive. Reports show that in areas where these paper wine bottles are an option, many wine purchasers are opting for them even if there is a glass option available.

These bottles are not made entirely of paper. The bottles are lined with plastic, and the outer layer is comprised of paper. One might immediately think, well plastic isn’t very green. However, the internal plastic layer is made from recycled materials that can then be recycled yet again. The paper used to create the outer shell of the bottle can be composted in a traditional backyard compost bin or can be recycled. GreenBottle reports that the paper can be used to create new bottles as many as seven times before it is no longer suitable for reuse.

While GreenBottle is not exactly earth stopping in terms of innovation, it is showing how deeply being green is infiltrating its way into our lives. The fact that these bottles were chosen over the traditional glass bottles shows promise that even consumers with highbrow tastes can green their lives.

The use of things like the GreenBottle, in addition to other means to green one’s life, goes a long way toward making the earth a better and more sustainable place to live. We all know that small changes really add up and seeing innovations used in even the most unlikely of places is a great sight to behold. This bottle also shows that greenness can be found in even the most unlikely of places, such as a compostable, recyclable paper wine bottle for good wine.

This is good that companies are starting to go green. Paper bottles are a step toward a better world. Many other stores and public places are starting to go green as well, so the message is getting out. It really shouldn't matter what kind of container a wine comes in as long as its the same quality, same wine new look. Regular people still have to do their part as well by supporting companies that go green, to keep the idea going.
