  • How to Spot an Eco-Snob
  • Our previous post explained that people naturally want to do the right thing, even if that means following other peoples examples. Some people can easily become green with envy, in the sense of copying their neighbors green purchases or habits. When everyone is trying to out do each other, sometimes it can lead one to become an ‘eco snob’.

An ‘eco snob‘ would be defined as one who is snobby about their environmental practices and/or environmental purchasing habits.

A prominent icon for environmental purchases would most widely be recognized through the Toyota Prius.

Anyone who sees one, instantly knows it’s a hybrid due to it’s popularity of high MPG among other factors. As the Prius has grown up from it’s original model, people in the online world as well as the real world have come to notice that some hybrid owners, more specifically some Prius owners, tend to have a sort of snobbish flare about their ‘green car’. To bring the point home, an episode of South Park very bluntly stated the status quo of some smug Prius owners who would brag about their eco friendly car.

There is much discussion on the internet about whether Prius owners are really eco snobs or not, but personally I think it just depends on whether you were snobby to begin with. Some snobby people know they are snobby, while others would get offended if you called them snobby even though they really were. SO the point of this post is not to differentiate whether you are a true snob or not, rather, it is to point out the discussion and perception that people have in our current eco-chic culture.

Now this is not new news my friends. However, the idea and concept of eco-snobs are ever present to this day. I don’t think it’s very hard to spot an eco-snob, but pointing out all those character traits will be discussion for part III in this series of Green with Envy.
