Bus Rapid Transit

Bus Rapid Transit
Bus Rapid Transit System in Eugene, Oregon

Bus Rapid Transit or BRT is a transit system that tries to emulate light rail by design, concept, and functionality but with the cost savings of a bus system. In Eugene, Oregon a relatively new BRT system called the EMX has been implemented as a public transportation option for Eugene and Springfield of Lane County in Oregon. The EMX route serves as an alternative mode of transit via its arterial link between the interconnected cities.

While still in its infancy, some people complain that the system doesn't necessarily improve travel time. However, Lane Transit District (LTD) argues that as congestion becomes a larger problem in Oregon's second largest urban area, the EMX will maintain its travel times with its dedicated bus lanes. Its low floor design allows for easy access for wheelchairs as well as people. The 60 foot long hybrid electric buses offer a sleek and sexy look that well suits the size of Eugene and Springfield all the while sipping gas and saving on costs. The EMX runs every ten minutes during the weekdays to try and accommodate people's busy schedules.

Another prominent feature about bus rapid transit systems are the high quality stations which often feature sheltered platform stops or open platform stops. North America is starting to use BRT systems as the more economic alternative to light rail. As the population center in Eugene-Springfield grows, hopefully the model of the EMX BRT system will be followed in similar population centers in the Northwest.
