School Children exposed to Pesticides?
A new report released by an environmental organization based in Eugene, Oregon called the Oregon Toxics Alliance reveals that children may unknowingly be exposed to toxics such as pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides. So the question is raised, are YOUR children safe from pesticides at schools?
The report indicates that children exposed to pesticides may show acute symptoms that may mimic other well known ailments such as headache, sore throat, and flu. The data from the report was pulled from three state agencies in the state of Oregon including the Dept. of Agriculture, the Dept. of Human and Health Services, and the Dept. of Forestry. It also cited 56 cases of suggested pesticide exposure at schools, bus stops, and child care facilities. The problem could be much worse than what is reported, and that worries Lisa Arkin, executive director for Oregon Toxics Alliance.
According to the Associated Press, this is not a new issue. Severe cases of pesticide exposure at schools have been reported in California and have even been attributed to death.
The Oregon Toxics Alliance is calling for better protection for children at schools through the implementation of Integrated Pest Management or IPM. IPM is a method for using less pesticides in favor of alternatives as well as best practices to protect people and the environment.

It is really scary that pesticides do more harm than good, while it's good for the soil but not for humans, keep out from the reach of children. I realize that you are a connoisseur in environment topics. :) You may visit our site for checking out our green topics. I'd appreciate if you can give me some feedback on our site: http://greenbydesign.com. I'd like to hear your opinion/feedback on our green topics.
Thank you,

Why is it we always seem to make the worst decisions, or allow them to be made for us, when it comes to chemicals being used in highly trafficked, highly populated areas? Thanks for the reporting.
this is scary!
Thank you for putting this out. It is necessary that people know so that they can take their decisions accordingly.
The Children's World Water Forum points to the existing concerns over the question of childhood and uses of water
Established in Quito during the 3rd World Water Forum, a section aimed at children makes connections between childhood and the question of water.
By: Efraim Neto
In developing countries, one third part of deaths in children can be traced to the disease of water way. The problem could be reversed with clean water and adequate sanitation. While 91% of the population has access to drinking water is still a large amount of people who still do not have this essential element for life. In the world 1.8 million children die each year from diarrhea victims, for example.
The Children's World Water Forum (CWWF), which occurs between 17 and 14 March, during the 5th World Water Forum, is a tradition that was established in Kyoto at the 3rd World Water Forum, where about 109 children, from 32 countries participated, and worked on issues of great importance to the welfare of children around the world. During the 2nd CWWF in the 4th World Water Forum in Mexico, 107 children from 29 countries shared 55 actions to help encourage local solutions to these issues. The children have developed actions in workshops and educational activities.
The involvement of children in dealing with global issues exemplifies the need for policy decisions that lead to activities that put children in the front line of action drawn to the issue of water and sanitation. In addition, children engage in effective action for social transformation is an opportunity to build a unified dialogue, and that has as objective the imposition of a significant change to the issue of water. Children are key actors in the water and in their deliberations or the decision-making.

Correct, I totally agree. Education is very important in order for everyone to understand what decisions to make.
Fred Smilek is the acting president of the Society to Save Endangered Species. It was founded two years ago by Fred Smilek along with his two best friends Charles and Jonathan. The Society to Save Endangered Species has blossomed from a minute organization with three members to one with more than ten members. Since its inception the organization has been able to raise nearly $25,000 in funds.
It was Fred Smilek’s love and passion for rare and nearly extinct species that caused him to form this wonderful organization in 2006. Additional content about the history of wildlife conservation can be found here. If you have any questions regarding the Society to Save Endangered Species, Fred Smilek, or how you can help insure that these rare species are around for a long time to come have a look at Fred Smilek’s home page which can be found here.

Why we continue to use aesthetic pesticides is beyond me. We need to move from a mindset of having to control nature to working with nature. In Ontario they are looking at banning pesticide use completely. Besides, dandilions are kinda pretty!
This aticle was interesting, but I have some lingeing questions. Where are the high concentrations of pesticides coming from? Ae they directly from the school's cafeteria, or is it some time of spraying that is happening in or around the building? I understand that the less of a cop that is eaten by bugs, the more crop is available for human consumption... however, if that food is making our children sick-- what's the point? We need to find a way to work with the insects without killing ourselves in the process. Thanks for the insightful read!
It is important to teach kids about change. Check out this video...

We must keep our children safe from PESTICIDES, as exposure can lead to sickness and possibly death. Make a promise on this issue:

I can't even imagine the thought of me growing up without the knowledge of being exposed to pesticides and all these harmful chemicals. I always push for environmental friendly solutions because the after effect of long exposure to these invisible chemicals can be a tremendous payback for your kid's health.
