Abuse on the Egg Farm
An animal rights group called Mercy For Animals uncovered a shocking undercover video that showed animal abuse at an egg farm in California. The chickens are clearly crammed in cages so small that they can't even spread their wings. These crammed conditions can make public health a more serious issue. If any more incidents like this continue to come out, then legislative action could follow suit.
The video was shot this year in a facility that supplies to a distributor called NuCal Foods Inc. NuCal Foods is one of the largest egg suppliers on the west coast which supplies eggs to Trader Joe's, Raley's, and Savemart.
The footage from the undercover video shows workers kicking and stomping on chickens and snapping the necks of sick hens. It also shows birds left with untreated wounds and crowded into cages, sometimes amid rotting corpses. It shows how after 1 to 2 years of being caged for their egg laying prime, they are thrown into a gas chamber and disposed of.
Is their any humanity for these innocent beings. If you still want to support the egg industry after watching this video, then I suggest you only support eggs that come from free range hens. I personally get my eggs from my mothers own free range hens or from local farmers at the Saturday Market. I know the price of food is going up including eggs, but getting eggs from a local supplier is possible. Check around for farmers markets, they usually sell eggs from free range hens. Beware of the video below, it can be graphic and somewhat disturbing.
