Sick of Being labeled "tree hugger" or "granola"?

Has your new found interest in the environment and global warming come with a price? The price of being labeled a 'tree hugger' or a 'granola'? Well it's time you fought back with some caddy backlash for all those SUV driving gas guzzling oil mongers. First let us discuss the origins of the terms.

What exactly is a granola and a tree hugger, where did these terms come from? SlangCity.com describes a granola as "crunchy-granola types: Also called earthy-crunchy, they wear natural fabrics (especially hemp) and long hair, sometimes in dreadlocks. They tend to be vegetarians, shop at the whole foods market and give money to Greenpeace." ...Is this true? Do most people who consider themselves modern environmentalists fit any of these characteristics? I fit a couple of them myself, in fact, this post has inspired me to create a poll. I really want to know if the stereotype fits the bill. Please take the poll on the side bar. Wikipedia says that the term granola was derived from conservatives who called liberals granola's due to them being made up fruits, nuts, and flakes. While it is true that edible granola bars are in fact made of fruits, nuts, and flakes, labeling all liberals as granola's in this sense is quite derogatory.

Slangcity.com goes on to say this about tree huggers: "tree hugger, a person who has strong environmental beliefs and works to protect forest lands. More extreme than the tree hugger is the tree sitter. These environmental activists build platforms in trees and sit on them in order to prevent the tree from being cut down. The most famous of these is Julia “Butterfly” Hill, who sat in an ancient redwood tree in Northern California for over two years in the late nineties." It's so funny that I actually own that book...its really good :). So called tree huggers don't actually go around hugging trees ya know, although some do, I personally don't know anyone who does.

It is my speculation that many people in the environmental world have been getting sick of all the name calling, that they themselves have resorted to fighting fire with fire. They do this by going as far as calling anti-environmentalists "Global Warming Deniers". Green Peace has gone as far as saying that you are either with us or against us, using marketing tactics that chill you to the bone. Even I think this video is extreme. Is it suppose to shock you into submission? I don't know all the answers, but I do know that all this back and forth enviro-drama is quite entertaining to say the least.

Environmental Positions of Presidential Candidates

If you’re just as excited about the upcoming presidential elections as I am, then it’s probably best to do some background research on some important issues across each candidate. Each candidate whether republican, democrat, or independent has issues that are more focused in certain areas rather than others. When it comes to changing the course of the next four years with a new president, it is the responsibility of U.S. citizens to voice their opinion with votes. The topic that peaks my interest the most is the stance each candidate has about energy and the environment.

Ron Paul

A republican presidential candidate that currently is a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Texas’s 14th district. Ron Paul stands out as a unique candidate because of his outspoken criticism of the Internal Revenue Service and the federal income tax. Ron Paul’s voting record does not seem to paint the picture of an environmentally friendly candidate and raises the question about whether or not he even feels something should be done at all about climate change. Ron Paul's official website doesn't even have the Environment as an issue listed, leading me to believe that it is not on the top of his agenda. Ron Paul’s scorecard on the League of Conservation Voters in 2006 was 25%. RonPaul2008.com

Hillary Clinton

A democratic presidential candidate that is currently holding a seat in the U.S. senate in New York. Her voting record in the senate proves that she really cares about environmental issues regarding energy and global warming. Some people say that the United States isn’t ready for a female president, but I say that she fits the bill quite well. She has a decent shot at winning the democratic primaries, but she’ll have to put up quite a fight. Hillary Clinton “introduced a plan to Congress to create a Strategic Energy Fund that would inject $50 billion into research, development, and deployment of renewable energy, energy efficiency, clean coal technology, ethanol and other homegrown biofuels, and more.” She wouldn’t raise taxes to its citizen’s but instead would give oil companies a choice: to invest in renewable energies themselves, or put money into a fund that will invest into renewable energy research (HillaryClinton.com). Her scorecard on the League of Conservation Voters in 2006 was 71%. HillaryClinton.com

Fred Dalton Thompson

Recently announced that he was joining the race for presidency. Fred Thompson is a former US Senator of Tennessee that held two terms. He is currently a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and has connections with the American Enterprise Institute, a very influential right wing and pro business think tank. Fred Thompson is a global warming denier, which doesn’t surprise me at all with his pro business affiliations. The subject of the AEI could be talked about in its own book. However, it may be important to point out that since they are a non-profit organization they thrive off of donations from organizations, corporations, and individuals. The AEI offered $10,000 to scientists that would try and disprove global warming, while it received a $1.6 million donation from ExxonMobil...it makes you wonder (read story here). Fred Thompson also had an acting career in film and television and most notably played New York’s district attorney in NBC’s Law and Order. Fred Thompson scored a 6% with the League of Conservation Voters in 2002 as Senator of Tennessee, as it is obvious that he is anti-environment. Fred Thompson Report

Dennis Kucinich

A democratic presidential candidate that currently is a member of the House of Representatives from Ohio’s 10th district. "I am not tied to any corporate interests that would strip our forests or pollute our air or water. Throughout my career, I have worked for structures of law that protect the environment, and the principles that animate my campaign are principles of sustainability (-Dennis Kucinich)." Talk about an environmental hero. Dennis Kucinich wants to invest in a 20% renewable energy portfolio by 2010. If we have the technology to be sustainable then why not invest more money into these markets. Dennis Kucinich as a candidate has a solid environmental voting record that dates back to his days in Ohio city counsel. With his scorecard on the League of Conservation Voters being 100% in 2006, I might have to seriously consider this guy as a strong candidate. kucinich.us

Joe Biden

A democratic presidential candidate who is a Senior U.S. Senator from Delaware serving in his sixth term. Joe Biden says this about climate change: "the science is clear, and the physical consequences of global warming are obvious in shrinking polar ice caps, retreating glaciers, stronger storms, and changing rainfall patterns." According to Joe Biden's website, if elected he was elected president he would restore U.S. leadership on climate change, cap greenhouse gas emmissions in the U.S., increase use of renewable energy, and increase fuel economy, etc. The list really goes on and on. I think it's safe to say that this guy means business when it comes to climate change. According to the League of Conservation Voters in 2006, Joe Biden gets a green scorecard of 100%. JoeBiden.com

Mitt Romney

A current GOP candidate that holds the position as Governor of Massachusetts. Mitt Romney supports a national energy policy to reduce foreign imports on oil, and he supports improving fuel efficiency in cars and in homes. So far I am not sure how he intends to implement those things, but he believes in energy independence as a national defense policy as well. When asked in the debates about the notion that republicans are often times thought of as having close ties to oil companies...his response was that he feels oil companies should re-invest their profits into new infrastructure that includes new refineries. Besides the fact that we do need new refineries, I don't think that he really answered the question. With regards to energy independence, Mitt Romney has the right idea; however, I don’t think that he truly is concerned about the environment. He does seem like a very good potential for the republicans that should not be dismissed. MittRomney.com

William B. Richardson

This democratic presidential candidate has a long list of political background in his portfolio. Currently he sits as the Governor of New Mexico. His political experience makes for a great candidate and includes, US congressman from 1983-1997, a US Ambassador to the United Nations from 1997-1998, and served as the US Secretary of Energy 1998-2001 before becoming Governor of New Mexico. From an environmental standpoint this guy has a proven ‘green’ track record: restored the Clean Water Act, revived the Clean Air Act, expanded disclosure of toxic pollution, preserved and protected National Parks, and he supported and protected the Endangered Species Act. Not only does he have a proven environmental record, but also a great strategic plan for energy. He has turned New Mexico into a clean energy state, and has the will to change the country to a clean energy nation. RichardForPresident.com

Mike Huckabee

Is a republican presidential candidate that served as the 54th Governor of Arkansas. The former Governor is a southern Baptist, and says this in regards to global warming: "Whether humans are responsible for the bulk of climate change is going to be left to the scientists, but it's all of our responsibility to leave this planet in better shape for the future generations than we found it." For a republican, Mike Huckabee is quite green. However, this former Governor is going to have to convince me further of his environmental passion. MikeHuckabee.com

Barack Obama

Is a current frontrunner as a democratic presidential candidate. He currently serves as the US Senator of Illinois. His previous experience is in the Illinois state senate. Barack Obama believes that we should take steps to limit the effects global warming. He wants to increase fuel efficiency standards and lower the carbon in our fuels. He would encourage auto manufacturers to create more advanced vehicles and he would require that 20% of our electricity come from renewable sources by 2020. These issues come together as an intuitive and comprehensive action plan with regards to the environment. The League of Conservation Voters rates Barack Obama with a 100% for 2006. BarackObama.com

John McCain

Is a republican presidential candidate that currently holds a position as Senator of Arizona. In general, Senator McCain is a pro-business kind of guy. He usually doesn’t care about the environment if it means businesses will lose money. However, he does have a mixed voting record that includes pro-environment bills. For example, he voted yes for including oil and gas smokestacks to be included in the mercury regulations put out by the EPA to cap mercury emissions. If I was a republican that cared about the environment, I think that I might vote for someone else who had a more positive solid stance for the environment. The League of Conservation Voters rated Senator John McCain at 29% for 2006. ExploreMcCain.com

John Edwards

Former Senator of North Carolina and former candidate for Vice President in 2004, John Edwards shoots for the presidential seat in 2008. This democratic leader is an outstanding role model for pressing environmental issues. John Edwards has a website entitled ReduceYourCarbon.com which is a website dedicated to encouraging Americans to pledge to reduce their carbon footprint. This proves that the climate change issue is one that is on the forefront of many people's minds. John Edwards plan for climate change includes capping greenhouse gas pollution starting in 2010 with a cap-and-trade system, and reducing it by 15 percent by 2020 and 80 percent by 2050. He would try to to implement a true global pollution reduction plan that would include developing nations unlike the Kyoto Protocol. John Edwards seems to have his action plans ready to battle climate change and is seemingly pro-environment. JohnEdwards.com

Rudy Guiliani

Is the guy that was the mayor of New York City when 9/11 happened. Does this GOP candidate have a shot at presidency? When asked about whether he believed in global warming, he accepts what most scientists are saying about it. He believes we should be developing alternative energy methods in the US. He calls it a national security threat for Americans to be buying oil from our enemies. Guiliani does not believe in signing the Kyoto Protocol however, because he feels that it would just offshore the carbon to China and India where they are considered developing nations not bound by Kyoto. 5 Things You Shouldn't Do When Trying to Be Environmentally Friendly

These days we are hearing from a lot of major and independent news sources about climate change. People that feel they should change their purchasing habits by becoming environmentally friendly should take a few things into consideration before further contributing to environmental damage. We all want to do our part for the Earth right? Well this post will help you to make sure you are doing it right. Here we go:

1.) Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs: a.k.a. energy efficient light bulbs do save a lot of energy and will save you money through their efficiency and through their longer lifetime. But, these suckers actually have a small amount of mercury in them, a dangerous neurotoxin. So, if one breaks in your house make sure to handle with care and to open the windows in the house so you don't breath in harmful mercury contaminated debris. This is the most important part...whatever you do, Do Not Throw Away A Broken Or Used CFL, you would only be contributing to mercury contamination in our landfills. There are special recycling centers that are set up to dispose of these bulbs. Some states and cities have actually outlawed throwing CFL's away, so check to see if it's illegal in your area. Goto this EPA webpage to find a local Recycling Program for your bulbs.

2.) Don't top off your gas tank: The next time you fill your gas tank up and try to squeeze in that last drop to so you can go further with less trips to the gas station remember this...Topping off your gas tank defeats the automatic shutoff valve thats there to allow room for the gas to expand in your tank. When you you top off you defeat the valve, thereby releasing large amounts of a known carcinogen called Benzene. Not only are you damaging the valve on your car which can lead to gas leaks, you are contributing to the damage of your health through high exposure to Benzene fumes which are invisible to the human eye. Visit this site for more information about the Don't Top off campaign in Oregon (site has relevant information applicable to any state or nation.)

3.) Say No to Styrofoam: Styrofoam has its uses as a great insulator. But when used to make products like throw away cups and plates...not such a good thing for the environment. All that styrofoam ends up in landfills and take hundreds of years to decompose. While styrofoam can be recycled, it often isn't due to the lack of cost effectiveness. More great information on styrofoam here.

4.) Plastic Nor Paper: This one isn't really fancied by many people, but the trend is catching on. Cities like San Francisco have implemented legislation that will charge people a small fee for using plastic bags in grocery stores. The idea is to have people use reusable bags to help curb climate change due to the fact that plastic is derived from petro chemicals or oil. Visit this site to get your reusable bag...they are all the trend now...especially here in Oregon. I bought 4 bags from this site...they are great and I use them all the time.

5.) E-Waste A growing problem in our modern and technological society is that our electronic equipment becomes outdated within a few years. People often want the newest and latest tech gadgets...who doesn't? However, as the world continues to develop these innovative products including televisions, computers, printers, cellphones, etc., an increasing amount of this E-Waste is ending up in our landfills as a result. Please don't just throw away your old computer monitors into the dumps, as these are among the most toxic e-waste items. An incredible amount of toxins are enclosed in these electronic products that are extremely toxic. By the way the image link on the right called Manufactured Landscape, is a documentary that gives the viewer a real sense of how bad the world's e-waste problem really is. Doing our part to donate still working products to others that can use them, or simply properly disposing of these products at your local recycling center can help us all help the environment. earth911.org/electronics has some great information about what to do with your old electronics.

Plus here's a video of 5 things you CAN do to help stop Global Warming:

TerraCycle and Scotts Announce Settlement Agreement

TerraCycle, Inc. and The Scotts Company have announced the agreed settlement of their legal dispute regarding false advertising claims and trade dress infringement. TerraCycle has agreed to change certain advertising claims and its package design to avoid possible confusion, and Scotts has agreed to dismiss its false advertising and infringement claims. Tom Szaky, the founder and CEO of TerraCycle today said, “We recognize that Scotts filed this lawsuit based on a legitimate need to uphold the accuracy of advertising claims and protect its trademark rights. We also regret certain statements that were made about Scotts in the heat of litigation. Now that the parties have resolved their differences, TerraCycle is looking forward to providing consumers with an array of garden and lawn care products in the marketplace.” Jim King, Scotts spokesperson, said, “Scotts is pleased to resolve this case and believes that the settlement serves the public’s interest in ensuring the accuracy of advertising claims, as well as protection of the valuable Miracle-Gro brand.”

This was the press release forwarded to me by TerraCycle. I am truly glad this lawsuit is over. Honestly, hearing that Scott's Miracle Gro was filing a lawsuit against TerraCycle infuriated me due to the virulent nature of this corporate giant. It feels like our entire nation is governed by top level industries and corporations now rather than our own elected officials. I am not quite sure what the desired outcome was from TerraCycle, however, I am sure that they too are glad that its over. They will have to change some claims and product labels, but if anything they got some great publicity from the lawsuit. Keep up the great work guys, we need more eco friendly companies like TerraCycle.

For more information about TerraCycle and the lawsuit by Scott's Miracle Gro go to my previous post here.

Energy Efficient LED Holiday Lights

Surprise everyone, whether you believe it or not, the holidays are coming around the corner. How can you tell? When holiday merchandise are just now getting stocked at your local Walmart. Well this post is aimed at getting those who choose to celebrate the holidays with lighting, that you do so in an environmentally friendly way. LED Christmas lights, are way energy efficient and have a whole list of benefits over their incandescent counterparts. Here are some major reasons why you should make the switch:

1.) 90% more efficient over incandescent lighting
2.) extremely durable by means of tough plastic
3.) safe, LED's operate at 1 degree over ambient temp.
4.) LED's will last up to 50,000 hours long
5.) Environmentally friendly by means of energy efficiency

The website is now offering a 10% off as pre-season sale on orders of $50. The LED lights also come with a full lifetime warranty so you can have peace of mind that they will last you for a very long time. With energy saving holiday LED's, the amount of energy you save will pay for the cost of the lights over time. These cool holiday lights are really a win win for everyone.

In all reality, it is my opinion that putting up holiday lights is nothing but a big waste of energy. However, if you do put up lights this year, please make the eco-friendly choice and use energy efficient LED's instead.

Ontario Environment

There is a great website worth mentioning for finding out the latest news on the health of the Ontario Environment. It is at http://www.on.ec.gc.ca/or-home.html and one catching story on the main page caught my attention. It was titled "Lake Superior Sets a New Record Low for August".

By the name of the title, one would believe that this is horrible news. But the article explains that "Please note that this is not an all-time record monthly low for the lake. That was set in April 1926 and is approximately 28 cm lower than the current level." But still, a low level lake is worrisome nonetheless.

The International Joint Commission (IJC) is also inviting Great Lakes researchers to submit or update information on their projects for the online Great Lakes – St. Lawrence Research Inventory.

The Inventory depends for the most part on voluntary participation from scientists and agencies willing to share some time and information in a spirit of collaboration serving the best interests of the Great Lakes ecosystem. With information on approximately 1200 projects, 1000 principal investigators and 300 funding organizations, the database represents a valuable information resource for Great Lakes researchers, managers and policymakers.

This is great news to find out that independent researchers and volunteers are helping keep tabs on the Great Lakes. Check out the above link for more information.

Stop BP

Hundreds of thousands of people like you spoke up to stop BP's increased dumping into Lake Michigan and affirm that the Lake is our gem and drinking water, not a corporate dumping ground. Thank you for protecting our Great Lake!

BP pledged to avoid increasing its pollution, but the fight isn't over.

Not only does BP's discharge permit remain on the books in Indiana, but other permits allowing pollution increases are pending -- for ConocoPhillips and Marathon Oil refineries right here in Illinois and for polluters elsewhere in the Great Lakes region.

The Lakes face a litany of threats, from sewage overflows, and pesticide run-off to invasive species and unrestricted water withdrawals. With years of progress cleaning up industrial pollution, and with so much left to do to restore the Great Lakes, this backwards trend is the LAST thing we need.

The people of the region have spoken: we must stop BP fiascos, move beyond industrial pollution, and restore our Great Lakes.

That's why we, along with our sister organizations across the region, are asking the Great Lake state Governors to take a vital first step to restoring our lakes: prohibit, once and for all, pollution increases into their states' waterways.

Take action to give our Great Lakes a fresh start by clicking on the following link and signing our petition to Governor Blagojevich:

Bottled-water Future Sales

The sales of bottled water in the United States are estimated to be $50 and $100 billion a year. It is also estimated that the demand for bottled water will continue to increase by 7 to 10 percent a year.

You might not be surprised to find out that the United States is the largest consumer of bottled water, followed by China and Brazil.

There are three major environmental impacts that comes from the manufacturing process of bottled water.

1. energy used in manufacturing, storing, and transporting bottled water
2. local effects on water resources
3. generation of solid waste

When we look at the costs for production of bottled water we find through a study conducted at Oregon State University in Corvallis, which states that every year "Around the world, factories are using more than 18 million barrels of oil and up to 130 billion gallons of fresh water" and that's just to make the bottles. It then takes another 41 billion gallons of water to fill the bottles.

The future trends of bottled water show that the world will continue to consume ever increasing amounts of bottled water. This will continue to put strains on our environment, in a time where many parts of the United States are experiencing extended droughts, possibly due to climate change. Oil is still needed in the manufacturing process which will continue to put pressure on our government for a secure and reliable oil supply for the coming years. How much oil is really left for the world to consume increasing amounts of the fossil fuel. The answer to these questions are truly unknown yet pose a grim future.

Terracycle Graffiti Jam 2007

Terracycle is one of my favorite eco friendly companies on the market. I have been purchasing their products to help my indoor herb garden over the summer and am very happy with the results. This blog has actually covered the law suit between Terracycle and Miracle Gro when it the story got media attention a few months ago. In browsing their site I came across a page that showed their annual event called the Graffiti Jam.

So I was wondering if they were going to have a Terracycle Graffiti Jam for 2007. From the pictures and the sound of community betterment, I sure hope they do. The graffiti jam last year, featured live painting from graffiti artists from DC, Texas, Virginia, and New York. The event was open to the public and featured DJ's while it lifted community spirit. It is also a great way for the company to get more public awareness and more community recognition. Please visit their site for a complete viewing of pictures from the graffiti artists.

Please support this company, as it is doing us all a grand service by taking waste and turning it into re-usable and all natural products.

Wave Power set for Oregon Coast

Two major projects off the Oregon Coast are planned to start generating electricity from the power of waves. Wave generators utilize the constant motion of waves and currents to power a generator that produces electricity. This is exciting news to hear that a new form of clean and renewable energy will soon hit the energy market. The company's PowerBuoy's have a piston-like structure inside that moves as the buoy bobs with the rise and fall of the waves. Related Blog Post: Wave Power

New Jersey based company, Ocean Power Technologies (Nasdaq: OPTT), recently signed a deal to demonstrate wave power generation on the Oregon Coast. They are to spend $500,000 to install their ocean powered demo Buoy system. These systems in particular will be located near Reedsport, Oregon and most of the buoy will be submerged into the water at depths between 100ft to 150ft. The current deal is for a 150 kilowatt PowerBuoy, with plans to initially generate a total of 2 MW approximately 2 1/2 miles off the coast. Ocean Power said Pacific Northwest Generating Cooperative has an option to buy into or purchase power from the planned future upgrade to 50 MW at the wave power park.

Australia based Oceanlinx Limited is planning a much larger construction project off the coast of Florence, Oregon. These guys want to build a system of buoys that are platform big. They will build something that looks similar to oil platforms: three hundred thirty tons big, and 23ft above sea level. The wave-energy generators that Oceanlinx is proposing will be in an area that starts a half-mile offshore and goes three miles out, extending six miles north and south. There will be 10 four-legged structures that measure 115 feet by 49 feet, not counting the cables and anchors that will keep them bound to the underwater sand. With those anchors, the footprint is 107,584 square feet.

If all goes well with permitting, Oceanlinx expects to file its application for a license in three years and deploy its first wave energy units thereafter.

All of these projects could generate several thousand jobs for the state of Oregon which has the potential to boost the state economy. I personally believe in the wave power and would like to see these projects start. From an environmental standpoint, there are some issues with the footprint these machines may affect as far as the eco-system goes, however, as long as careful placement and studies are done to prevent the worst effects are conducted then I am sure that projects like these can proceed forward with minimal impact.

"Grow" User Submit Green News

A new feature to the website Aboutmyplanet.com called Grow Green News. Its purpose is to grow a community of green and eco conscious members that can submit green articles they come across. Once submitted, other members in the community can review the article and if they like it, they can select the "grow" button to boost the articles popularity in the community. If the article is popular enough, it will appear on the home page of the Grow section on the site.

I signed up and posted an article to review the process and ease of use. It was easy for me to install the link to my bookmarks. Once I selected an article, I clicked the bookmark and a window appeared asking me for input such as title, and a brief description of the article in my own words. The one thing that sets this site apart from other social networking sites, is its ability to allow users to post pictures, videos, and even youtube links to the description in the article submission. This in turn, I believe, can add dynamic user generated content with a common goal of spreading news on pressing green issues such as global warming, climate change, and conservation.

The very environmentally friendly site also has a host of other very dynamic sections with very useful and valuable information. Most notable are the blog and forum. The blog is definitely up to date with the latest green info and the forum hosts users who contribute to green topics. All in all, this very green website is doing its part to raising awareness on important environmental topics.

Turkish Farmers Struggle with Drought

The past ten months in Western Turkey have left very little rain, have dried up lakes, and have burned up many crops. Some farmers are left with no choice but to travel vast distances to Eastern Europe with huge empty water tanks just to water their crops. This years bad weather in Turkey is just a prime example of how the climate is altering its patterns and leaving some with poor quality growing conditions while actually enhancing others. If another year like this one occurs next year, the farmers will be completely helpless. Things like water are becoming more scarce in certain areas, while desertification is wiping out good farming soil into infertile and unusable soil. I expect to see more and more news such as the video clip below. Watch it, to get more of an understanding of the situation there.

Cubicle Depot: Eco-Friendly Used Office Furniture

With a very strong environmental movement on the way due to the effects of a global warming or climate change, people are becoming astoundingly more aware of their purchases. For example, more and more people are demanding so called green products that reduce harmful impacts on the environment. One quick trip to the health food store and one will notice hundreds of products that are targeted towards the eco consumer. One website that is enormously helping out with this issue is Cubicle Depot based out of Dallas, Texas.

Cubicle Depot offers a way for "green" conscious shoppers to buy used and refurbished office furniture. By purchasing office furniture from Cubicle Depot, you are helping to keep unwanted furniture out of land fills. Most of the furniture includes office cubicles, modular furniture, and office chairs; each is crafted or refurbished with the environment in mind while using only the best of fabrics and fine paints. It is most certainly the best choice for startup companies, especially green startup companies. Really this company is helping reduce the need for the production of new office equipment, and thereby is aiding in the conservation of our limited resources.

They also have a business listings page which offers some pictures of the type of furniture available. In this day in age, everyone must do their part to lessen their harmful environmental impacts, and re-using, if at all possible, is always the green way to go.

New Atlas changes for Climate Change

It would only make sense that we must update our atlas's and maps every so often. But due to the extensive effects of climate change, some drastic changes will be added to the new Times Atlas. For example, Lake Chad in Africa was 95% larger back in 1963 than it is now! Many other examples like this are taking place all over the world. Soon perhaps the worst effects of global warming will be soon to come since the worldis too slow to act on such an important issue. Share this article by clicking the Mash Button.

Cell Phone Recycling

Wirefly is an online company that sells a vast amount of cell phones to people. Thankfully, Wirefly cares about the environment enough to adopt recyclying, and re-use programs for the millions of old and discarded cell phones that are generated every year. Think about how many new cell phones get sold every year in the United States? Or even the World? What happens to those old cell phones? Well instead of throwing them away, which creates an e-waste hazard, you can recycle them and help spare the environment yet another toxic mess.

Why bother recycling your old cell phones? They can leak out damaging toxics to the environment. They can be of some use by other people, many charitable donations give old cell phones to people who need them. And finally, in some states it could be against the law to NOT recycle your old cell phone due to the growing popularity over potential environmental hazards. The Wirefly website has a really nice detailed explanation on the issue. Now I totally support this as I am very strong opponent to e-waste and its potential toxic possibilities on the environment. However, I always tend to lose my cell phones rather than have one left over after buying a new one. So if you happen to find a cell phone, and contact was not possible with the rightful owner, then you should recycle the phone.

When it comes down to deciding which recycling program works the best, first consider what you intend to gain from the donation. There are three options that are available to someone who would like to donate their phones.

1.) You can donate your phone and receive a cash value for its worth. (sounds good)
2.) You can donate your phone for direct use to someone else who needs it
3.) Or you can donate the phone and have the cash value donated on your behalf to a nationally supported charity.

Read Here for more details on the recycling programs.

Whatever you decide, you are helping keep cell phones out of land fills. This act alone is helping the environment, which is something we should all try to contribute to in a positive manner. Honestly people, this goes along with trying to prevent e-waste just like in the film Manufactured Landscape (image link on the sidebar). Please help do your part and spread the word.

The glaciers in Columbia have been receding at alarming rate. One hundred and fifty years ago the entire Colombian glaciers covered approximately 150 kilometers. There is only 16 kilometers left today, and Colombian scientists expect those to disappear by 2025. The video below explains how locals in Colombia are trying to spread awareness about the glaciers as an endangered species due to the lack of water that could occur should the glaciers no longer exist to provide fresh drinking water. In turn, many people are trying to find ways to conserve natural resources.

There is not much the world can do about the increase of melting glaciers which many scientists believe to be the cause of greenhouse gases. The only real thing we all can do is to try and reduce our carbon footprint by using less electricity and by walking or riding a bike instead of driving. These minor efforts can help mitigate the global warming effect.
