Hong Kong Choking Pollution

Hong Kong's pollution problem has risen so high that many question the ability for Asia's financial Hub Center to sustain. Many foreign investors and professionals are asking their clients to turn to Singapore instead solely due to the poor air quality. A lot of the problem lies with mainland China, however, the entire world must see that pollution affects all people of this world. The point trying to be made hear is that we can longer take for granted the way we live our lives. We must now act and unify our process of change. This change must be a positive one that is in tune with the Earth...the way it was meant to be from the very beginning.

After watching this short clip, it makes me realize that there is much work that needs to be done to transform everyones thought processes. Corporations that dont care about the environment will soon be forced into environmental compliance or face stiff fines. We need to wake up and educate each other. Eye of the Dolphin

So there is this new film coming out that I think pertains to the nature of this blog. It seems like great film for all those animal lovers, especially the dolphin lovers out there. It also seems appropriate to post this as an inspirational film attributed to dolphins given the recent dolphin headline that I have posted about before. The river dolphin in China is thought to be extinct now, as well as the dolphins that have been murdered off the coast of Brazil.

That being said, the film is about a young girl who forms a friendship with a wild dolphin in the Bahamas. However, her father, who is a dolphin researcher, forbids his daughter to have any contact with the wild dolphin due to his beliefs that wild animals should be left alone in the wild. Please take a look at the trailer below and take a look at the Eye of the Dolphin movie website. Carly Schroeder, who starred in this summer's soccer hit "Gracie" is also in the film Eye of the Dolphin, and it opens August 24th...which is today. Also you can enter to win in a contest to win free movie tickets on the film website before August 26th.

Dolphins Killed in Brazil

Watching this video really saddens me and watcher beware. If you can't handle bloody dolphins then I suggest you don't watch the clip. Nevertheless, it's instances like this that the famous documentary entitled "Earthlings" tries to raise awareness about. Earthlings is a documentary film that basically shows people the archaic and cruel methods used to kill the animals that humans eat. There are all sorts of processes including de-beaking, de-horning, and castrating that go on without any anesthetic. The film also shows a great deal of gore and bloody violence enacted towards several dolphins and seals. Its literally so sad...it will make you cry. Please watch it on Google Video, its titled "Earthlings". I own a copy on DVD, so I can show people what really goes on in slaughtering houses.

The claims made in this film about the fishermen who said the dolphins just got caught in the nets happen all the time. Maybe they were caught in the nets on purpose. People get around technicalities in the law all the time. These people should be punished for their crimes against another harmless sentient being. These creatures have done nothing, and yet we kill them. Where is the humanity in that?

Ontario Toxic Chemicals to be Labeled

Canadians watchdog groups are fighting back by demanding that certain companies label the ingredients in their products that are known to be carcinogens. The entire makeup industry will soon label that some of the ingredients in their products can cause cancer. Certain plastics, and even products like nail polish remover contain nasty carcinogens. Even some ingredients that are in food can cause cancer such as the pesticides used to spray agricultural products. Watch the film Below:

Click the Mash button to Share this video on your website

All in all, toxic chemicals are used in many products that we use. This is generally why I advocate for green products or organic products because it has a lesser negative impact on the environment as well as a lesser negative impact on health. I choose to be a vegetarian and eat only local organic food due to all the unknown outcomes with consuming synthetic compounds, genetically engineered agriculture and ingredients, antibiotics, cloned meat, pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides.

Green Hotels popularity soars with Global Warming

The popularity of so called "Green Hotels" has seen a rise in recent times due to growing concerns about global warming. The issue has been a hot topic of discussion in the political realm as well as the scientific realm. Many people say that science and politics don't really go well together and I would absolutely have to agree with that. Nonetheless, I have just recently learned of these hotels and am obliged to see they actually tailor to a certain eco-conscious crowd. Why not anyways, a hotel can probably save quite a bit of money by trying to save energy. Watch this video:

Just off the top of my head I can think of a few ways that hotels can save money and go "green" while doing it. For example, everyone knows that hotels do a lot of laundry, so why not invest in energy star laundry machines and dryers. Another easy thing to do would be to set the automatic thermostat a little higher, as they are always set for a cool 70...so why not 73 or 74, its not that much of a difference and saves money. The hotel can purchase a radiant barrier called HeatBloc-75. It is a film that goes on the roof and blocks up to 75% of the sun's rays resulting in less heat to cool down in summer months and a smaller energy bill. Anyways, if you care about the environment enough that when you see an advertisement for "green hotels", give it a try and let me know how the experience went. I will definitely do so myself if I stay in one in the future.

BP Whiting Indiana Refinery Update

Facing intense criticism for the state's decision to let BP America increase discharges into Lake Michigan, Gov. Mitch Daniels on Monday ordered a review of the state's environmental permitting process. Daniels appointed James Barnes, former dean of the Indiana University School of Public and Environmental Affairs, to lead the review which is due in six weeks. So in other words something has to be done by somebody because everyone is upset about this whole issue; with good reasoning too...I would not be happy with an oil company dumping any amount of ammonia, mercury or solid waste material into MY drinking water...no matter how little or large the amounts actually are.

In June, the state Department of Environmental Management issued a new wastewater treatment permit to BP's Whiting refinery. Apperently people had fought it, but ever since the story got major coverage from the Chigago Tribune, more action is being taken to oppose the permit.

The new permit, plus a $3.8 billion expansion of the refinery, will allow BP to make an additional 620 million gallons of gasoline from Canadian crude oil. But the process will result in BP releasing 54 percent more ammonia and 35 percent more suspended solids into Lake Michigan, a major source of drinking water for Chicago and other cities. (According to www.indystar.com). But look no further than the actual permit available via this link (take notice to pg.6 at the bottom for allowed amounts of ammonia, chromium, etc.) Once again more pollution in the drinking water supply is NOT GOOD for anyone.

And you can look here for other documents that are BP related.

See my previous posts: Here, and on this post there is heated discussion between BP backers and environmental activists...read that post here. Consider sharing your thoughts on the issue, comments are always welcomed and encouraged.

Honestly people, when will the value of Human health and human life be more important than corporate greed. If you haven't noticed yet...our country is being run by profit seeking, greedy, selfish, power hungry CORPORATIONS that only care about a buck. My honest opinion about BP is not a good one, this whole environment crap from an oil company is all about PR. They campaign and advertise so that people will be brainwashed into thinking they're something they OBVIOUSLY are not. Just my two cents, and I hope you enjoy the continued coverage on this BP Whiting Indiana Refinery story.

Animals Deaths from Changes in Environment

The past year has brought up some environmental disasters that may or may not have gotten a lot of media attention. Below I will describe events that have taken place to show the public that changes are needed in our daily lives to minimize the effects we are having on the environment.

To the right is the most recent news story on the Shearwater Sea Birds which have recently had mass die offs on the south eastern coast of the U.S.

Hundreds of dead seabirds washed ashore the coast in recent weeks that have been starved to death. The question is, why have they starved? Scientists are trying to figure out if something has changed in the ocean that could have affected the fish these birds normally ate.

An estimated 1000 birds have been found from the Bahamas to Florida and all the way to North Carolina. The birds have already been tested for bird flu, which came out to be negative. Should we simply push this issue aside, or should we look at the bigger picture and sound off alarms?

Back in May, there was an issue of sea lions, dolphins, and sea gulls due to a toxic algae bloom off the California coast that killed hundreds of sea gulls and sea mammals. Link Here. Scientists say this annual algae bloom has the potential to get worse every year due to the algae having optimum breeding conditions in warmer waters. The animals actually die from domoic acid poisoning. Global Warming may eventually create a problem where thousands more sea birds, and mammals will die if the trend of Global Warming or Climate Change continues to increase ocean temperatures off the coast of California.

VHS, or Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia virus, is a very virus that has emerged in the Great lakes in recent years. Common symptoms of an infected fish are bulging eyes and bleeding skin. Scientists acknowledged that the virus cannot be stopped but can be slowed down. This virus has affected more some 25 fish species and is threatening the fish supply in those areas. What caused this virus and what conditions do they thrive in? The anthropological effects of humans can truly be seen through these pictures and often bring a sense of environmental graffiti.

Peak Oil and War

The authors of a new study warn that food and water shortages that could potentially be caused by global warming could spark wars. The study conducted, evaluated the history and correlation between war and climate change between the years 1000AD and 1911AD. The study was published in the August 2007 issue of Human Ecology which reviewed 899 wars fought by China during the time period mentioned. The study found that the occurrence of war was in sync with times of agricultural problems due to climate changes.

Also, a report was released by several top retired military officials in the U.S. back in April that warned that global warming was a national security threat. They predicted war over water, and various other problems due to rising sea levels. It is true that global warming will in fact benefit some regions while hurting others. For example, the northern hemisphere will experience better farming conditions due to warmer conditions while the tropical regions will experience more severe weather patterns.

And finally, there is a group of scientists who fear that we are about to experience worldwide peak oil between 2008 and 2018. Once peak oil does occur, the world will never be able to produce as much oil as it once did. Scientists have studied the peak oil issue for some time and say they all seem to have a different prediction model. Some scientists believe that by the time the world realizes it has reached peak oil, industrialized nations will have already begun to wage wars against other nations for the dwindling remains of oil. Imagine waking up to CNN or FOX news to hear that the world has reached peak oil…the gas prices at the pump would literally sky rocket.

Possible Solution: We need to urge our governments to support alternative fuels and renewable energy. The only way we can do that is to write letters, join campaigns, and spread information. Drive fuel efficient vehicles or conserve as much energy at home as possible. All these things combined will be able to produce a positive reaction. Cheers.

Reducing Carbon Footprints

I believe since Al Gore's film came out and introduced the issue of Global Warming to the masses, there has been a new revolution occuring in our society. This revolution is called the "green" revolution. Some are aware of its existence, and are more than obliged to realize their habits of wastefulness and change to a more sustainable lifestyle. Others reject this so called theory...possibly due to stubbornness, selfishness, and greed. In all reality the modern world we live in is blinded to the wasteful nature exhibited and practiced everyday. The idea of global warming, puts a little responsibility into every human being to make a change towards reducing carbon footprints and leading a more sustainable life. This means change is required, and not too many people take kindly to change. This movement is a slow process which is making progress everyday.

Among the leaders of this movement seem to be the private industry rather than government. Thankfully, companies like Google have started projects of installing solar panels on the roofs of their buildings to reduce their energy consumption. Other businesses like A #1 Air, are helping their customers conserve energy and thus reducing carbon footprints. Traditionally companies like A #1 Air, based in Dallas, are viewed as repair services . However, as the green movement has progressed, so has the desire of businesses like this to adapt energy conservation products and services.

One of the ways A #1 Air offers methods of energy conservation is with a product called Applegate Cellulose Insulation. Applegate Cellulose Insulation is an energy efficient cellulose insulation that will both lower your bill and improve your heating and cooling systems. That means in the hot summers your home will keep cool air in, and in cold winters your home will keep warm air in, thereby, saving you energy and money. This insulation is energy star rated and can be applied to new or existing homes that are considering becoming more energy efficient.

Yet another product that A #1 Air offers is whats called a radiant barrier. Don't be alarmed by its name. It simply is a method of reflecting the sun's heat away from your home instead of transferring it into your home through the roof during the summer. The product called HeatBloc-75, is a liquid applied barrier, made of a breathable film that goes on your roof. The barrier is designed to block up to 75% of sun, which could result in an energy savings of up to 25%.

In conclusion, if you are home owner that is concerned about reducing your carbon footprint and you want to take responsibility for trying to reduce the effects of global warming...then consider the products and services of A #1 Air.

Clean Coal: Is it really Green?

A coal specialist for the Sierra Club, Alice McKeown, cites that when most people think about pollution from coal, they often only think about the pollution at the smokestacks. However, she concludes in a study released last month by the Sierra Club titled “The Dirty Truth about Coal”, that the pollution starts at the coal mines and goes all the way until the electricity is burned and used in homes and businesses.

According to “The Dirty Truth About Coal:” half the nation’s electricity comes from coal which uses 260 million gallons of water each day, produces 120 million tons of solid waste per year, and is the cause of 80 percent of the carbon dioxide pollution from electricity production in the United States.

There are new technologies out called Carbon Capture and Sequestration, which is a method used to capture carbon dioxide at large sources such as power plants before it reaches the atmosphere. However, without proper storage, it is completely useless to capture carbon dioxide. Alice McKeown’s study is trying to remind people that coal is still dirty no matter what you do to it. It will still pollute and current methods of carbon capture and storage are still in the early stages and more expensive than conventional coal fired plants.

The Sierra Club has been actively trying to block new coal plants from being built in the U.S. and have succeeded in some cases, and in others at least delayed them. Many nations around the world have a large coal supply and it is an easy and viable means of producing energy. However, with global warming…coming up with alternative solutions and renewable energies will have to be put on the table before new coal fired power plants should be allowed to be built.

New Study Hits Climate Skeptics

Scientists say new alaysis counters claims that the sun's changing energy levels cause global warming. These new findings add to a growing body of evidence that human activity, not natural causes, lies behind rising average world temperatures. While many scientists now acknowledge this, a small group of skeptics argue that phenomena like solar flares on the sun's surface are causing global warming.

I have written a blog post about the theory that Global Warming is not caused by man but by the Sun. There is a documentary called the Global Warming Swindle that tries to address the issue. Watching it made me realize that there are many different sides to the story. I still believe now that man is causing the "Earth Changes" or more widely known as climate change that we are experiencing now to some degree.

In my opinion there too much evidence to prove that the planet is warming and climate patterns are changing. Regardless of how you feel on the issue watch the short video clip below and decide for yourself.

Desalination Plants on the Rise

The French utility services group Veolia has won a contract worth 702 million Euros (945 million dollars) to design and build a water desalination plant in Saudi Arabia. The plant is expected to be completed by 2010 and will produce 800,000 cubic meters of water per day. Saudi Arabia already produces 24% of the total world capacity of freshwater using desalination.

Desalination refers to a process that removes excess salt from water to make it suitable for consumption by animals, humans, and/or irrigation. Desalination plants are generally very expensive and require heavy infrastructure compared to the costs of filtering or treating freshwater from rivers or wells.

More and more countries facing extreme drought conditions are looking towards desalination as a last hope for a source of freshwater. For example, Australia is in the process of building a $3.1 billion dollar desalination plant which will cost $140 million dollars a year to run and is expected to be completed by 2011. As climate change continues to alter the weather in such a way that it creates extreme drought conditions, desalination plants will be a last hope for fresh water in certain parts of the world.

There are environmental impacts with desalination plants that should be considered as well. Marine life really takes a hit when desalination plants are built due to the ocean water intakes. Plankton, fish eggs, and fish larvae can potentially be destroyed by as much as 90% when desalination plants are not designed to protect them due to increase in costs and decrease in output potential.

The decline of ancient civilizations in Mesopotamia, the Mediterranean region, Pre-Columbian southwest U.S. and Central America is believed to have been strongly influenced by natural resource degradation from non-sustainable farming and forestry practices.

Possible Solution: Sustainable Agriculture
1) Improve water conservation and storage measures
2) Providing incentives for selection of drought-tolerant crop species
3) Use reduced-volume irrigation systems
4) Manage crops to reduce water loss
5) Rain Capturing Systems

Cow Dung Power

An Israeli company is reducing pollution and producing energy with the help of cow shit. Thats right cow shit is now a viable source for "green" energy. Who would have ever thought the power of brown could transform to the power of green. Certainly the greenhouse gases that emit from the cow shit could be used to generate electricity for thousands. Why aren't we doing this in the US? I think there are a lot of projects on the drawing board...but it takes some serious investors to get the ball rolling. We all know that the US has plenty of cow and hog shit to power the entire North American continent with all those hog shit lagoons over in the Carolinas...so why we haven't we followed suit? Well hopefully this Israeli project will serve as a model example of how to turn brown into green...in more than one way :)

Update 3/5/2008: An energy company in California has now harnessed the power of cow dung for natural gas pipelines.

EPA won't Stop BP plan to Dump More Pollution into Lake Michigan

The EPA is allowing the Corporation British Petroleum (BP) to dump more pollution into Lake Michigan. I have written a sponsored post about this here which basically tells BP's side of the story in more detail. I personally am against the dumping of more pollution into the Lake even though BP says they are within federal limits. There are lot of issues surrounding this new BP plant...and we do need oil...there is no doubt about that, but it just seems that when we allow corporations to continue to pollute our natural environment that we are heading in a backwards direction as a society instead of moving forward toward sustainable and renewable energy.

Overfishing

This amazing photograph illustrated below tells the story of how the overpopulation of humans can exploit the planet in an unsustainable manner. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization publishes a report every year on the state of the World's fisheries. According to their last report in 2006:

* 52% of fish stocks are fully exploited
* 20% are moderately exploited
* 17% are overexploited
* 7% are depleted
* 1% is recovering from depletion

So according to those statistics, at least 25 percent of the world's fish are either overexploited or depleted! What's even more upsetting is that another 52 percent of the world's fish are fully exploited...meaning they are in danger of becoming overexploited and are at maximum production for sustainability and in danger of collapse. The sad part about this story to me is that it will take a catastrophic disappearance of fish for the world to realize that it has gone too far and depleted it of life. If no management occurs this can easily occur. Many island nations in the Caribbean have to fish farther and farther out due to overfishing. African nations face the same problem, especially in Lake Victoria.

Green Machines

And from the BBC news site comes this really great idea thought up in the San Francisco Bay Area's Silicon Valley. A company called SolFocus has designed solar panels to focus the energy of the sun onto a small location thereby intensifying the energy from the sun. These panels use 1/1000th the material as traditional solar panels and are much more efficient and viable in today's demand for solar energy. Unlike flat panels it means the expensive materials used to convert the energy to electricity are concentrated in one place. SolFocus claims to use 1/1000th of the area needed by flat panels, which keeps the manufacturing costs low.

SolFocus explained: "These cells have efficiency over double that of the best silicon today. We concentrate the sun 500 times on that small amount of cell, hence the 1000th of the amount of material used, or the expensive part.

"When there is no sun, or you can't see the solar disc, our panels produce zero power. They only produce power in bright sunny locations or when the sun is out."

Contracts have already been signed with the Spanish government for a large scale solar farm in Southern Spain.

Yamuna River in India to be saved from Pollution and Sewage

The Yamuna River, which passes through Delhi in India, has been over polluted in the past few decades. According to a news website in India called NewsPostIndia, the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh appointed a special committee to help clean it up.

The faecal coliform count, which indicates the presence of disease causing micro-organisms, is nearly 25,000 times more than the limit prescribed for bathing (Center For Science and Environment -India June PR). Delhi has only 17 sewage treatment plants. According to Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) figures (January 2004), 73 per cent of sewage treatment plants in Delhi are under-utilized and only 10 per cent are running to capacity.(continued below)

To view a website that really shows the real problem, check out this documentary Faecal Attraction: Political Economy of Defecation. Delhi and Agra together account for 90 per cent of the pollution in the River Yamuna. The Yamuna is one of the most polluted rivers in the world, especially around New Delhi, the capital of India, which dumps about 57% of its waste into the river.

The specially appointed comittee will be assigned the task of restoring the river to its former glory by 2010, just in time for the Commonwealth Games. It is my hope that they will be able to handle the sewage and pollution probelm to this heavily polluted river.

River Dolphin is close to Extinction

National Geographic

river dolphinSince April of 2005, there has been a population between 127 and 161. Right now there are about 160 left. The problem has been with Cambodians allowing for fish nets in the river. Last year, the Cambodian government banned the nets, and the population has increased. Yet many new born river dolphins are dying within one to two weeks from their birth, indicating that the river could be too polluted among other things. It would be sad to know that these creatures which are strikingly similar to beluga whales...become extinct due to anthropogenic reasons.

More Recently:
Scientists in Russia are studying the Beluga whales in the White Sea region as a way of protecting one their unique breeding grounds.

Dutch Energy Neutral Homes

In the Netherlands, the Dutch have designed new energy neutral homes that actually give back more power to the grid than they consume. This is all being done to reduce man's impact of climate change on the Earth. In my opinion, more ecological home's should be built anyway to reduce the harmful effects of pollution from other dirty energy sources including coal. Home's like the ones in the video clip are just the start of a new "green revolution" as the planet realizes that it can no longer take more than it gives back.

Rooted in Ireland: A Tree Planting Project

Rooted in Ireland is an oak planting project in Drumconwell, which is just outside of Armagh, . The tree site is set on 9 acres of beautiful, lush farmland, overlooking the picturesque and hugely historic Cathedral City. It is reputedly the same ground that King Conwell once strode upon, and indeed, there are the remains of an old ring fort, and a mass rock, in close proximity. This is an area steeped in history, both ancient and modern. It has been the spiritual capital of Ireland for 1500 years. It is the historical center of St Patrick’s congregation, and the burial place of Brian Boru. It has been an educational center since that time, which is why it is known as the city of saints and scholars. The history of the area is fascinating, reflecting 6,500 years of activity. People first arrived here in 4,500BC and have been arriving ever since, attracted partly by the wealth of visitor attractions including Cathedrals, museums, County Parks, National Trust properties, modern theaters, and a great range of restaurants, bars, and music venues. There is one thing however that is sadly lacking on the landscape, and that is trees. Ireland as a whole is now the most treeless land in Europe, with County Armagh being one of the worst affected, and this is where the Rooted in Ireland story begins.

The three directors of Rooted in Ireland, Patrick Nugent, Anne-Marie Nugent, and Peter Slevin had spent hours discussing setting up a business that was wholesome and beneficial to the environment, while also being unique to the area. Inspired by an article in an Australian newspaper about a similar project in Sydney, they set to work clearing and preparing the land, mapping out the planting paths, and finally, planting the oak trees themselves. So far, most of the tree dedications have come from people in the USA, the most notable of whom is an Upstate New York Mayor, Mr. Jim Sottile. In August 2006, two of Rooted ’s directors were invited to have a stall at the Federation of Genealogical Societies annual convention in Boston, Massachusetts. The response to the project was outstanding, with all the promotional material gone in a matter of hours. Their website has seen a huge increase in traffic since August, and people are purchasing trees to give as wedding presents, christening presents, birthday gifts, memorial trees etc. Some have been bought in memory of grandparents and relatives who arrived in the USA from Ireland.

The directors have big plans for the project, and intend to ultimately plant 10,000 trees in total. The site will be developed as more trees are purchased, and will include a visitor centre in the style of a famine cottage, a viewing platform, and various decorative features in keeping with the surrounding countryside. The project is currently being considered for funding by various grant bodies including the EU peace fund and will become an integral part of a visitor’s experience when they arrive in Armagh. The directors have been heartened at the help, encouragement, and support that has been given to them by people from all walks of life. It seems that everyone can see the benefit of the Rooted in Ireland ethos, and this is perhaps summed up by t
