Millions of missing bees in Taiwan

Taiwan is experiencing extraordinary bee losses in the millions. The article I found is four days old, but why aren't people more upset about something like this. This is not only a great environmental disaster, but also a looming threat to our food supply worldwide. In three parts of Taiwan most of their bees are gone...around 10 million bees to be exact! A bee farmer in north east Taiwan reported 6 million bees gone for no reason! The Taiwanese government is reporting this mass die off of bees as an isolated incident, when clearly the rest of the world is also experiencing the same problem. All this has happened in the last two months. Someone needs to do something...and fast. I have covered the bee losses from the beginning in this blog and will continue to do so as I feel it is an important issue as the story progresses.

  • Miracle-Gro Sues Small N.J. Organic Plant-Food Maker

Okay now this really pisses me off to hear some corporate giant bullying a small organic company. What is wrong with Corporate America?!? Must they monopolize everything to make more profits?!?

    So here's the scoop:
Scott's Miracle Grow...famous (59% of market share, $7 billion in global sales)
TerraCycle...not so famous (annual sales of $1.5 million dollars)

TerraCycle is an eco-friendly company that uses worm waste packaged into used plastic bottles as organic plant food. It's a great idea, and the guy that started this (CEO Tom Szaky) company is only 25 years old. This company should be honored for its service to the environment...honestly!

So here comes the evil Corporate Giant that is making all sorts of bogus claims and has filed a law suit.
    terracycle
"They're claiming that (the colors) yellow and green are theirs," Tom added, "Miracle-Gro has sued us over advertising. I've never bought an ad."

Miracle Grow also sued for falsely claiming that its organic products are better than synthetic ones like Miracle-Gro.

Ya know what this sounds like to me? This sounds like the same tactics that Monsanto Corporation was using against milk producers putting labels on their milk that said "no artificial hormones".

It's time for people to wake up and realize that there is no corporate responsibility. When will corporations be held accountable for their actions. Certainly not with government agencies like the EPA, FDA, and USDA. It will take we the people to create and force change in this country.

    Visit Terracycle Website: Terracycle.net
By the way you can also help this company collect used 20 ounce soda bottles, while the company donates 5 cents per bottle to a charity of your choice.

Aspartame's Safety Questioned Again: Equal and Nutrasweet

Italian researchers who previously suggested the artificial sweetener (made by Searle/Monsanto, the FDA's best buddies) heightens the risk of cancer are saying it again, based on a new study they did. The FDA not surprisingly disagrees. The study shows that in rats, there are significant increases in cancer. Oh but the FDA, my favorite government agency is doing what it does best and protecting the corporations and screwing over the American people. There are huge amounts of counter studies done on humans that show no sign of a link between the artificial sweetener and cancer, but some say more studies still need to be conducted to make sure. Another question one might need to ask is, who is funding these counter studies? I for one would rather not have any artificial sweeteners in my body, especially when the scientist that developed it accidentally discovered it when he was trying to make an insecticide. So here a is a little research on Aspartame thanks to Rich Murray.

"Aspartame is an artificial sweetener consumed by hundreds of millions of people worldwide. It is used in over 6,000 diet products including soft drinks, chewing gum, candy, desserts, yogurt as well as in pharmaceuticals, in particular, syrups and antibiotics for children."

    aspartame (methanol, formaldehyde)

Dr. Morando Soffritti of the European Ramazzini Foundation and a study group in Spain called Trocho et al, suspects that the carcinogenic nature comes from the conversion of molecules into formaldehyde. One liter of diet soda, about 3 12-oz cans, gives 61.5 mg methanol, so if 30% is turned into formaldehyde, the formaldehyde dose of 18.5 mg is 37 times the recent EPA limit of 0.5 mg per liter daily drinking water for a 10-kg child.

Upon ingestion, aspartame breaks down into several residual chemicals, including aspartic acid, phenylalanine, methanol, and further breakdown products including formaldehyde and formic acid. - Wikipedia

    EPA fact sheet for Formaldehyde

So essentially what we have are clues that this substance might be harmful. So why would anyone bother taking the risk in the first place? Why do people gamble with their health and trust a corrupt government agency when there is counter evidence to suggest that the Nutrasweet and Equal are cancerous?

The precautionary principal is what should take precedence in this situation. Avoid artificial sweeteners, and be healthy. End of story.

California Assembly Committee Calls for Phase-Out of Incandescent Lights

California is joining the global warming bandwagon by phasing out the incandescent lights in favor of the energy efficient ones. The problem I have with this situation of mandated conversion of bulbs ( I have already converted,) is the fact that if the fluorescent bulbs break in your house, you literally have to call in a hazmat team to clean it up due to mercury contamination. If it breaks up in your house, you are advised not to vacuum or sweep because you are then just spreading the mercury contamination around the house.

We already get enough mercury drift from China all along the west coast including California, Oregon, and Washington. Worrying about mercury in our seafood is another concern. Too much exposure to toxics can lead to serious health problems.

I am all for fluorescent bulbs, but I feel governments should put systems in place to deal with these issues before they enact laws that force people to use them. People can't just throw away a fluorescent bulb in the garbage, they must go to a special recycling center. Very few people will actually do this, and most likely mercury contamination and pollution will be with us for quite some time in the future. Just my two cents.

Link between herbicide Paraquat and Parkinson's Disease

One study shows that farm workers who used the common weedkiller paraquat had two to three times the normal risk of Parkinson’s, a degenerative brain disease that eventually paralyzes patients.

A second study shows that animals exposed to paraquat have a build-up of a protein called alpha-synuclein in their brains. This protein has been linked to Parkinson’s in the past.

A third piece of the puzzle shows that this buildup of protein kills the same brain cells affected in Parkinson’s.

Parkinson’s disease, which affects more than 1 million patients in the United States, is marked by the death of brain cells that produce dopamine.(Read More)

Health Industry under attack by FDA through CAM regulations

A 17 page document has been published by the FDA on Complementary and Alternative Medicine regulation. This will affect everyone living in the United States if pushed further into the law. The FDA is attempting to re-define classifications and marketing on everyday products such as vegetable juice that make claims to better aid your health. For example, if carrot juice was marketed to prevent [fill in disease], then the FDA would classify carrot juice as a drug, and be subject to pay $50,000 for an investigation for a new drug application, $200,000 ~ millions to determine the toxicity, and upwards of $3 million on the efficacy of carrot juice. This would have to be done as a process for each disease that carrot juice has made a claim on. If allowed to become law, anything and everything from supplements, vitamins, juices, to Sobe fruit drinks could be banned unless they comply with these new standards that the FDA wants to implement. In effect, the Health Care industry will be mutilated and consumers will have extremely limited access to the freedom of consumer choice we now have. The FDA has a long standing reputation of attacking health drinks that have made claims to better your health for marketing reasons. Why are we the subjects of the FDA rule. We the people do not elect FDA officials, so it is our responsibility to write our congressman about the way we feel regarding the FDA. The FDA accepts comments from the public when enacting new regulations, and it is important that the very least we can do is write a letter expressing our concerns in regards to this CAM regulation. Submit a comment to the FDA here.

While the last day for commenting is April 30th, 2007, the Organic Consumers Association is working with congress to extend the commenting period for another six months. Please support this issue and submit a comment.

USDA to put thousands of low income Organic Farmers out of Business

A controversial new directive from the USDA threatens to deny organic certification to thousands of small organic coffee, tea, banana, rice, sugar cane, cacao and other farmers around the world. The USDA's directive would eliminate the longstanding practice of certifying organic and Fair Trade family farm cooperatives as a group, rather than forcing each coop member to pay for individual certification. Thousands of organic and Fair Trade farming cooperatives around the world have been established over the past few decades to help low-income farmers in financing and marketing, and in acquiring otherwise cost-prohibitive certification for their farms. Most of the world's small-scale organic coffee farmers take part in these cooperatives, so eliminating group certification, will drive thousands of family farmers out of business while giving large-scale commercial coffee plantations a competitive advantage.

This Link explains what grower groups are and how they obtain organic certification.

FDA seeks to remove "irradiated" labeling

The FDA is on a rampage to remove more labeling making consumers unaware of the food they are eating. The FDA currently has a policy for food manufacturers to display the international radura symbol and the statement "treated by irradiation" or "treated with radiation" clearly displayed on the packaging of foods that have essentially been nuked with radiation from powerful x-rays and gamma rays to remove bacteria and prolong shelf life. A move like this would be beneficial to food manufacturers and grocery stores, but bad for farmers and consumers.

If you have an opinion on matters such as these, the FDA is accepting comments from the public, click here to leave your comment.

Speaking your opinions on matters like these to government agencies does work when the people respond in overwhelming numbers. The FDA was forced to extend the amount of time to accept public comments over its controversial announcement of allowing for cloned animal meat to be introduced to the food supply in 2008 without labeling because of the huge response from the public.

Currently, few foods are irradiated. Though several major health and science organizations, such as the World Health Organization and Infectious Diseases Society of America, have endorsed food irradiation as safe, US consumers have been slow to warm to irradiated foods.

China Creates Artificial Snowfall in Tibet

cloud seedingChina has successfully created artificial snow in Tibet using modern weather modification techniques. The process works by seeding the clouds with silver iodide, which has a cooling effect. Officials in China are worried that global warming will cause the Himalayas to melt and create widespread drought. They view artificial snowfall as a possible way to thwart off drought.

Cloud seeding is a controversial issue with activists that fear loading up the atmosphere with silver and other chemicals can pollute the earth, air, and water. Cloud seeding is favored in the United States by the National Weather Modification Association.

Synthetic Trees could purify air from carbon dioxide

synthetic treesAfter watching a global warming documentary last night I learned of something that I have never heard before. The creation of synthetic trees that could capture carbon dioxide and release them in a calcium carbonate form (the stuff sea shells are made out of) or sodium carbonate liquid, and store the carbon permanently. Geo-physicist Professor Klaus Lackner thinks he has found a solution that could solve our problem of too much carbon dioxide output. Regardless of whether or not you believe global warming is affected by carbon dioxide, within 100 years from now, carbon dioxide will reach levels never seen before.

synthetic tree forestToo much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere does affect the environment in negative ways. It also affects animals, plants, and humans. According to Professor Lackner, it would take about 250,000 of these synthetic trees to soak up the amount of carbon dioxide we emit annually. It works by having chemical veins that are compacted very closely with a solution of sodium hydroxide. The solution then absorbs carbon dioxide and then forms a sodium carbonate liquid which can then be piped away for final storage. This in effect mimics mother nature, except that plants store carbon in their tissues.

    Capturing Rainwater

rainwater barrelOne way to alleviate dependence on city or county water supplies is to purchase a rainwater capturing system. The system can be as simple or complicated as your budget allows, and would help alleviate water shortages and drought problems. Not to mention, that capturing water from the rain is a free renewable source that could serve as a backup in case of any type of emergency. In some states across the US and in some countries, rebates are offered to citizens by the government who purchase a water tank to capture rainwater to alleviate water shortage areas. Rainwater can be as simple as a plastic barrel with a gravity feed to a flowerbed or vegetable garden, or it can be as complex as serving all your water needs. Here is a link to harvesting rainwater that offers information on how to build a suitable system.

Capturing rainwater runoff from your roof is the single easiest thing anyone can do to ensure water security in drought stricken areas. I have visited parts of Mexico with no water at all or running water limited to certain days of the week. Most people had to get creative during the winter months to ensure enough water for their families. Often times, rows of rain barrels are utilized to save water. This is an easy thing to do and its fun too.

Spring Freeze devastates the South's Fruit Crop

This spring has brought forth new lows in Georgia and North Carolina, with a record of 21 degrees. Farmers who have orchards of peaches say they lost up to 90% of their crops to the freezing cold temperatures. Strawberries have also been affected, but the official damage is still unknown. What this means is that this summer, we can all expect to pay more for domestic fruit. This coupled with the looming effects of colony collapse disorder and I am sure we are all going to be in for some real high produce prices in the supermarket. With all the crazy weather patterns moving from one extreme to the other, its hard to tell what we can expect. Some will say it is global warming, but who knows. The people of San Francisco have recently been told to cut 10% of their water usage, and many counties across southern Florida have been told to reduce their consumption by 30%. If these trends of extreme weather, drought, severe storms, and environmental disasters continue, then the American public should brace themselves for some hard times ahead. Just my two cents for the day.

Oregon looks to Technology to replace Gas Tax

As a resident of Oregon and as an owner of a hybrid vehicle I am appalled at what the state is trying to do in order to raise more tax money. Not only is this a blatant attempt to squander away more taxes out of Oregonians since they rejected a bill to raise gas taxes back in 2000, but it is also an invasion of privacy that is attracting interest by governments worldwide. The tax for one gallon of gas in Oregon is 24 cents per gallon. This is the states largest source of income to build and maintain roads. Since more and more hybrid vehicles are being driven, the state claims that they are losing money to them. So to make it "fair" they would rather tax you on the amount of miles you drive. How would they do that? Well this is where there is a possibility to infringe on privacy. They install a GPS system in your car that tracks every mile you drive in the state of Oregon and especially in the Portland Metro Area (because you'll get taxed if your stuck in traffic too), and when you go to fill up at the pump, a wireless receiver automatically detects your miles and charges you the tax. This GPS system has been tested by a group of 250 volunteers, but still has some bugs to work out. Before signing up for the program the volunteers were told that in case of a criminal investigation the GPS system would be used to subpoena them. What else would "they" use this system for?!? Many other states around the US and even the UK are looking towards Oregon as they finish up there final testing reports in June to one day replace the old gas tax. But if my gut tells me something it’s... the high failure rate of 15% which is unacceptable is on purpose. The failure occurs at the pumps, when receivers get confused on which cars go to which pump, in which it would revert to the old gas tax. So an easy way of "fixing" this problem would be the combo use of GPS and radio frequency identification, or RFID systems. This would solve the confusion problem and everyone in the state of Oregon would be tracked. Oregon already has RFID readers at various locations on I-5. I know what these look like, I know what they do, and I know what they are capable of doing. In San Francisco Bay Area, people who want to skip the long wait to cross a bridge are given a Fast Track RFID device that allows them to skip the traffic and cross the bridge with their toll being deducted straight from their bank accounts. Well the department of transportation alongside with Sprint developed a project to monitor traffic flow electronically through the use of two devices: radar guns installed on almost every major freeway and RFID wireless receivers. The system inputs all the information into a computer program and that was how 511.org was born. Meanwhile people who willingly signed up for Fast Track unknowingly are delivering data to computer systems all over as they drive about their daily lives. Not that this information is being used to spy on the American public, its the fact that it has the capability to spy on the American public at the discretion on some government agency that has become obsessed with Domestic Terrorism in the name of freedom. Any who, just to my two cents for the day...

Lake Victoria, Africa's Largest freshwater Lake suffering from Overfishing

According to Wikipedia, overfishing occurs when fishing activities reduce fish stocks below an acceptable level. In Lake Victoria, the 2nd largest freshwater lake in the world, the lake is home to catfish, lungfish, and other small fish, but the real prize is an invasive species called the Nile perch. Europeans pay good money for this fish, as it is a favorite in European supermarkets. British colonizers introduced this fish to the lake which came to dominate native species. The Nile perch can reach up to 5 feet long and weigh up to 400lbs, and is worth $1.15 per kilo (2.2 lbs) to the fishers. This has created a $250 million fishers market for the people of Congo, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda and has created literally hundreds of thousands of jobs for Africans. The export business has also created modern processing plants, trucking companies, and air cargo brokers. On the downside it has also attracted cheap hotels, restaurants, bars, and prostitution.

The Nile perch also attracts another invasive species which is creating a serious problem for fishers, the water hyacinth. The water hyacinth is a fast growing weed that chokes the waterway, making it difficult to fish in parts of the lake. It often makes a suitable habitat for mosquitoes which can harbor disease, as well as a species of snails that are known to harbor parasites. Since using toxic chemicals is often too expensive and ineffective, the USDA has introduced the Weevil as a method of bio-warfare, a beetle that feeds on the water hyacinth. The bottom line is, in 2001, the fishing catch amounted to 1.29 million tons. In 2006, the catch dropped to 820,000 million tons. This drop has creating an even higher demand for fish and created a sharper decline in fish stock due to heavy competition between African fishers who depend on catch for their livelihood.

Forest Elephants are being Slaughtered with new roads in Africa

Scientists in 1989 estimated there were 170,000 elephants left in the wild. Today the number may be much lower. With new roads being constructed in central Africa, poachers gain more access to the valuable ivory they seek. Many poaching camps and slaughtered elephants have been discovered, leading scientists to fear a dramatic decrease in the elephant population. "It is not the physical effect of the road that is the issue—forest elephants actually like roadside vegetation—rather it is the fact that unmanaged roads bring people, with their guns and ammunition," says the lead author of the study being conducted by the Wildlife Conservation Society.

The poaching seems to occur mostly in the African country of the Republic of Congo.

The study also found that poaching is less likely farther away from roads (no poached elephants were found 28 miles from the roads). The poaching is caused by an illegal trade of Ivory to countries like China. These roads need better management to protect the endangered forest elephants which is what the study calls for.

Monsanto attempts to remove rBGH-free labels from Milk

Today 500 letters from Monsanto and other concerned individuals have been submitted to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in an attempt to recuperate losses in sales from its rBST hormones, sometimes called rBGH hormones sales. Industries like monsanto logoWholeFoods and Starbucks have taken a vested interest in their consumers to purchase milk from organic milk producers or producers that have labeling of "rBST-free", "rBGH-free", or "hormone-free". Monsanto claims that its use of hormone injections in dairy cows produces no harmful effects on the milk, and claim it to be the same as milk produced without injections. Dairy farmers, and industry professionals have come to Monsanto for a solution to their shortfall in sales due to what they call "misleading labels".

Monsanto disclosed: "We believe low milk prices and some processor requests for 'r-BST-free' milk are limiting our future sales" of Posilac. So it only makes sense that Monsanto contacts their buddies in the FDA to remedy their profit losses (Source). Are high milk prices are going to help Monsanto sales? It's no wonder why economists project milk prices to increase by fall by as much as 16%...because it may deter companies from switching to 'rBGH' free milk.

Letter to FDA from Office of Policy Stewardship

Directory of Industry Affairs: Also at the bottom of this attachment are example ads from milk producers.

Monsanto and others that are losing money from sales due to their use of rBGH(or rBST) are exploiting the technicalities of the claims that the milk producers are claiming. For example, when a milk label says "hormone free", technically that is misleading because female cow hormones are what make dairy cows produce milk, so consumers really are drinking hormones. Labels that say "no artificial hormones" are scrutinized because they say that there is no test that can detect the difference between cows milk produced with rBGH or without. Then they have the audacity to continue and say that labels such as "rBGH free" are misleading because it leads consumers to think that that milk is safer than other milk, which according to the FDA is the same. What people fail to realize is that the FDA, USDA, and EPA, are corrupt. Despite their intentions, they are filled with members of industries of interest, i.e. agriculture, bio tech, and pharmaceutical. These industries, one way or another get there way in order to keep there profits rolling in.

There is plenty of counter evidence to support the fact that rBGH is bad for cows, people, and the industry. Is there some connection to the reason why economists expect a 30 cents rise per gallon of milk by fall to $3.35 per gallon, a 9% increase, some expect as much of 16%. (src:Fox News)? Is it to recover profit losses from poor rBGH sales? They say it's for the rising costs of fuel and feed costs, but could it be more than that? One must raise questions like this. With other big shot companies like Wal-Mart, Kroegers, and Vons phasing out their purchase of milk with rBGH, Monsanto's sales for the hormone injection are declining.

Ciguatera Poisoning worsens with Pollution and Warming

toxic fishAccording to the associated press, experts estimate that up to 50,000 cases of ciguatera poisoning occur every year. This mostly comes from eating exotic fish that feed on toxic algae produced when coral reefs get bleached. The bleaching occurs due to pollution and warming waters. Many fish including grouper and barracuda live near reefs and feed on smaller fish who eat the toxic algae. Now there are more toxins, and there are more species of algae producing the toxins all over the world. In recent years ciguatera poisoning has worsened dramatically compared with 20 to 30 years ago.
