German Chancellor Angela Merkel pushes Global Warming Agenda

Article Link

The German Chancellor Merkel is set on promoting Global Warming in a big way.Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor Some say that her mission is two fold, due to the fact that she is a former physicist and environmental minister. She has a double presidency as president of the European Union and also for the G8 group of industrialized nations. Some say she is also motivated because an opportunity to spotlight her profile is available by convincing the United States to sign a successor of the kyoto protocol for when it expires in 2012. Some say that she may be able to succeed where Tony Blaire has failed. These are just issues that we will just have to wait and see the outcome to.

50,000 scientists Head to the Poles to assess Climate Change

A coordinated effort consisting of 50,000 scientists from over 63 nations is being sponsored by the U.N.'s World Meteorological Organization and the International Council for Science. $1.5 billion dollars is being funded for the research which is planned to start on March 1, 2007 and go until 2009. A full range of summer and winter will be evaluated, as well as the eco-systems that inhabit the poles ( nearly 4 million creatures.)

south pole, AntarcticaEverything from submarines, icebreakers, and satellites will be used to study the exact nature of how climate change is being affecting on the poles. Also, solar radiation will be researched as well as the marine life. All these projects will be completely coordinated to give the scientific community a detailed assessment of the conditions on the poles. This is the most extensive research project that is being conducted in 50 years, so the information that is obtained from it will be invaluable.

Global Warming: Enough to Make you Sick

bacterium Vibrio parahaemolyticusOyster men in Alaska have never had to deal with the bacterium Vibrio parahaemolyticus, a dangerous microbe infected in warmer waters like the gulf of Mexico. However, water in Alaska has been getting warm enough for the dangerous microbe to survive in the 59 degree water. Due to this, cruise ship passengers in Alaska that had eaten local oysters came down with diarrhea, cramping, and vomiting...the first cases of Vibrio food poisoning in Alaska. Scientists later determined that it wasn't just the bacterium but the warming water that allowed them to migrate.

The spread of human disease is one of the main fears scientists have with global climate change. Incremental changes in temperature is allowing for a re-distribution of bacterium, insects, and plants (invasive species)...introducing people to new diseases that they have never seen before.

In Sweden, fewer colder days in winter and warmer days in summer has caused the migration of ticks northward, which coincides with the increase in the tick-borne disease encephalitis.

Researchers say that poison ivy has become more lush and potent, due to more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

In Africa, as higher elevations are getting warmer, mosquitoes are following to Mt. Kenya...introducing malaria to villages that have never been exposed to before.

Scientists agree that global warming is not the sole cause of the spread of new diseases to new areas, but do acknowledge that it certainly is a contributing factor.

Honda Fuel Cell Car due in 2008

Honda fuel cell vehicle

This sounds like a really great idea doesn't it? Here we have a car that tops out at 100 mph and travels up to 270 miles on a tank of compressed hydrogen...that through a chemical reaction releases nothing but water vapor through the tail pipe.

Is it that simple? Well Hydrogen(H) just so happens to be the most abundant gas on Earth in the Universe. However it is usually combined with so many other molecules, which makes it difficult to isolate the H atom all on its own. After all oxygen is attached to two hydrogen atoms to make the water compound...H20, as humans we are not designed to extract the oxygen from that compound. The government has sponsored millions of dollars to support fuel cell technology in recent years. So too has the auto industry's own Research and Development sectors put in time to develop the "so called" clean energy for cars. Honda has developed the Honda Energy Station 3...designed to be hooked up and installed to your natural gas line at home which converts and delivers one full tank of hydrogen everyday for fuel cell consumption. The molecular compound for natural gas is CH4.

Honda hydrogen station

How is this making the United Stated less reliant on fossil fuel and foreign imports?!? With natural disasters Hurricane Katrina and Rita, natural gas production hit an all time low causing plants to shutdown while a demand for natural gas has continued to increase. This has caused the United States to depend on the foreign import of Liquid Natural Gas...eliminating any chances of the US becoming energy self-sufficient in the short term.

In a report from Jose A. Villar from the Natural Gas division and Frederick L. Joutz from the Department of Economics the two state that "an increase in crude oil prices resulting from an increase in crude oil demand may lead to increased costs of natural gas production and development, putting upward pressure on natural gas prices."(read their 43 page assessment: The Relationship between Crude Oil and Natural Gas Prices)

This statement says it all. With China's increase in demand for oil, the scarcity of it can drive demand and prices through the roof. Prices of natural gas are bound to remain high and get higher. This solution of "clean" energy is not going to be able to lead this country out of its energy crisis in which it currently resides in. I am all for fuel cell technology, extracting hydrogen from CH4 is a bad idea which only keeps America in a never ending cycle of imports. Solutions can be developed to extract hydrogen from H20 if more funding went to serving that path instead...it only serves me to think that the powers that be had purposefully created this "solution" to keep them rich, and get them richer by forcing the United States to import fossil fuel source from countries like Canada.

At least for now people are still offered a way to be more efficient. Driving a hybrid or a fuel cell car derived from natural gas can help the situation and is a great transitional technology. This technology seems promising but still has major hurdles to overcome in this nasty energy market and infrastructure we have in place today.

Australia bans Incandescent bulbs to curb Global Warming!

banned incandescent bulbs, energy efficientAustralia will be the first in the world to ban incandescent bulbs in an effort to curb Global Warming through energy efficiency. This is the most proactive solution that I have heard yet. The government in the United States should follow the AU's action on this one. The bulbs are to be phased out over three years, allowing everyone

to purchase new energy efficient bulbs, fluorescents, or LED's. This is an overall benefit for everyone as it will reduce 800,000 tons of carbon dioxide in a year for Australia and will reduce household lighting costs by 66%.

Millions of fish dead after storm on top rated beach in Scotland

Article

Millions of fish including crab, plaice and flounder, starfish, scallops and an octopus washed up on 5 miles of top rated beach front in Scotland. 80 percent of them have died, while staff have been trying to get some back to the sea. This has all happened over a three day period according to a general manager of a nearby aquarium. It seems that this is yet another example of mass animal deaths.

Sign Petition: The Heat Is On, 100,000 signatures needed!

Dear Blog Readers,

Can you believe that in just two years a new president will be inaugurated?

At this critical juncture, we have a tremendous opportunity to make sure our next president is committed to solving global warming.

Will you help? Take action now and lend your voice to call for solutions to the climate crisis.

Because real solutions to global warming are so important, the League of Conservation Voters has launched an unprecedented campaign to make climate change a top priority for the presidential candidates.

The Heat Is On! From the start, we plan to make a big splash: 100,000 voices united in a call for global warming solutions. Together, we’ll make sure every serious presidential candidate hears our concern about global climate change when it counts the most.

But only if you sign the petition. Will you help us reach 100,000?

This issue can’t wait. Climate change’s destructive impact on our precious wildlife is already obvious -- from Alaska, where melting sea ice is pushing polar bears to the brink of extinction to Florida, where rising sea levels threaten huge areas of crucial habitat for coastal and wetland wildlife.

The terrible truth is this: Global warming is real and it is an unprecedented threat to our environment, our health, and our economy. That's why this will be our biggest campaign ever.

To put this issue-front-and-center in the race for the presidency, we have committed to…

Place organizers in early voting states - Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina and Nevada - to work on the ground with our state league partners

Challenge the media to cover global warming as part of the presidential campaign, meeting with reporters who cover the candidates

Track and report what each of the candidates is saying about global warming

Use the 2008 presidential primaries to generate a vigorous national debate on global warming

Click here NOW to sign LCV's Heat Is On petition.

The stakes have never been higher. The race for the presidency has already begun. The time to speak out is NOW. Join thousands of conservationists from across the country in sending presidential candidates a strong message when it counts the most.

Add your name to the petition click here.

This is just the beginning. Two years from now, because of your hard work, we can inaugurate a president who will combat global warming and usher in a new era of clean energy. But it all starts now with us.

Thank you so much for your support.

Pine Bark Beetles: Detroying 70% of Forests in Some Areas

Pine bark beetles are beetles that wreak havoc on forests by eating them alive much like termites and are found in the Northwest Americas. Usually these beetles have a one year cycle and in most cases die off in the harsh cold winters. pine bark beetle destructionHowever, extreme cold winters have been less common due to global warming and high numbers of female beetles are surviving for a second or third year creating a population explosion of these beetles and entire forests are getting destroyed. It requires a temperature of 25 to 32 degrees to kill the beetles off that reside in the inner bark of these pines: lodgepole, ponderosa, sugar, and western white pines. However if temperatures drop slowly and steadily, a natural alchohol based anti-freeze called glycerol is generated in the beetle which allows them to survive freezing temperature. If a sudden drop in temperature occurs, the beetles will then die off in a day or so. Scientists have no idea of how to stop these beetles from completely destroying entire forests. One thing is clear though, global warming and warmer winters are creating a serious issue with these particular invasive species. With less forests means less carbon dioxide(the most emitted greenhouse gas) is being absorbed.

Livestock: major contribution to Global Warming

I have come across a 409 page report that I think shows some interesting numbers and points out something obvious, but yet not much people think about it. LIVESTOCK. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Livestock industry is generating 18 percent (in CO2 equivalent) of greenhouse gases, this is more than the transport industry! This is due to the other gases Methane and Nitrous Oxide that are contributing to the greenhouse gas effect. Nitrous Oxide is a greenhouse gas that has 296 times the Global Warming potential of C02, and this comes from manure. Methane (23 times as warming as C02) is also a greenhouse gas that is released in the atmosphere from ruminants.

A ruminant is any hoofed animal that digests its food in two steps, first by eating the raw material and regurgitating a semi-digested form known as cud, then eating the cud, a process called ruminating. Ruminants include cattle, goats, sheep, llamas, giraffes, bison, buffalo, deer, wildebeest, and antelope.

Now for the facts:

  • Livestock uses 30% of earths entire land surface

  • Feed crops for animals occupy 1/3 of all farmable land

  • 9% of drinkable water globally is used for these feed crops

  • 100% of corn and soybean crops are sprayed with herbicides that are then fed to cattle and humans in the United States

  • 30% of corn is sprayed with insecticides in the United States

  • 2.1 billion people live in areas with water shortages...water is a scarce resource.

  • Since pre-industrial times Carbon Dioxide has jumped about 31%

  • Since pre-industrial times Methane has jumped about 150%

  • and since pre-industrial times nitrous-oxide has jumped about 16%
  • Water is going to be the resource to compete for in the near future. With livestock accounting for 20 percent of biomass on earth, providing food and water for the world will become an ever increasing task.

The global population is reaching the tipping point of having too many people on it. The implications of global warming and the population explosion we are currently experiencing will ultimately result in world-wide disaster. It seems to me that we are already at the point of no return in terms of being able to curb global warming. The Kyoto protocol is fine and dandy, but will ultimately do very little to stop the devastating effects that are to come in the near future.

170 species of frog extinct in last decade to strange fungus and global warming

    http://www.enn.com/today.html?id=12231

An amphibean ark is trying to be creating because the world's frogs are quite simply dying off due to strange fungi, and other unknown factors. Scientists estimate that 170 species have become instict in the last 10 years and that an additional 1900 more species are threatened. It is also important to recognize that this fungus isn't the only thing killing the frogs, it is merely hastening their deaths. Global warming, pollution and deforestation are the real killers.

It is important to note that amphibeans are a vital part of the food chain which eat insects that other animals will not. Without frogs keeping insects in check, the insect population can grow to overwhelming populations that can spread disease and threaten food supplies.

500+ Pelican Deaths in Costa Rica

The mysterious death of 500 brown pelicans struck the country of Costa Rica last week. Scientists have ruled out bird-flu since bird-flu usually strikes migratory birds, in which, Pelicans have stable permanent colonies. It will take days to figure out what has caused the deaths. One can only wonder what the real reason is, but it frightens me to learn that mass deaths of animals are continuing around the world and nobody seems to be publishing the real reasons why these animals are dying.

This trend will continue to baffle scientists who aren't prepared to tell the world that because of human activities, more and more species will become endangered and then extinct. Scientists must speak out and let the public know that changing climate conditions and the effect that pollution has on the environment is killing off the Earth's species. This may not affect us now, but the problem will snowball into a greater problem in the near future.

Colony Collapse Disorder, Honeybees are dying!!!

There are tens of thousands honeybee colonies being killed off by a mysterious disease all over the country, which is actually affecting honey production. Researchers are trying to find the reason behind the ailment affecting the honeybees and are calling Colony Collapse Disorder.

Reports from more than 22 states are claiming that they are seeing honeybee deaths, some reporting over 50% of their colonies dying off. If more than 50% of the honeybee population is dying, their starts to become a cascading effect for local agriculture surrounding the hives of the honeybees. The honeybee is one of the main sources of pollination for local agriculture, along with birds and some insects. A report by the National Research Council had reported that in order to bear fruit, three quarters of flowering plants rely on pollinators for fertilization.

Upon dissection of the dead honeybees, abnormally high number of foreign fungi, bacteria and other organisms have left there immune systems weakened. Other researchers think that pesticides might have something to do with it.

In my opinion, we are the tipping point where eco-systems will all come crashing down due to our inability to be balanced with nature. Our pesticides, our greenhouse gas emissions, our pollution, our negligence is starting to affect EVERYTHING. A cascading effect has already starting on different parts of the web of life. My recent blogs have indicated this, and I am also trying to prove how global warming is affecting all walks of life. According to national geographic, species that endure harsh weather conditions, are already at their limit of survival. People often wonder what 1 degree warmer does to the earth, but that 1 degree is literally pushing species into extinction and mass deaths. Research has been conducted that can show the stresses of what 1 degree can do to certain species. Hopefully our honeybees will survive the stresses we may have induced upon them.

Mysterious Mass bird Deaths all over the Globe

    500 Australian bird deaths
    60 Texas Bird Deaths
375 Duck Deaths in Denver, Colorado

Deaths of birds are rising all over the world. The articles I have linked above are just the deaths of birds in which the Avian Bird Flu has been ruled out. Some say the birds are dying because they drank toxic water, others think it could be a harsh climate.

Then there are the endless slaughter of turkeys, chickens, and ducks, due to the Possible infection of bird flue. Are the deaths of all these birds going to help us or hurt us? Entire eco-systems are being disrupted worldwide, whats another part of the sensitive web.

Ladies and gentlemen, we are at a tipping point in the ecology of our environment. Many prophets and ancient civilizations have predicted times in the future of famine, drought, climate change, and death. We may be close to that tipping point in which the entire system may come crashing right before our very eyes.

1000 sea turtles dead, 100,000+ tilapia fish dead, Blue Jellyfish invade AU

    Dead Sea Turtles Artcle
    Dead Tilapia Fish Article
    Blue Jellyfish Invade Australia Article

The tens of thousands of Tilapia that have died was due to temperatures being too cold to withstand, ( a rare thing and sad sight)

The turtles are sad too. The article says conservationists are blaming fisherman for poorly laid nets, but fisherman deny the charges saying they rarely catch sea turtles. The evidence is that the sea turtles have bulging eyes and neck, which indicates that they have died due to lack of oxygen. It is my own theory that this is true. However, global warming may be the cause of these deaths, due to high pH levels in the water creating dead zones in the oceans which are bodies of water without oxygen.

The Blue Jellyfish in Australia are another example of how warming waters are reaking havoc on the marine life. More than 30,000 people were stung by the blue jellyfish in 2006, which is twice as many than in 2005. Scientists are blaming this on warming ocean temperatures which cause the jellyfish grow in numbers. This phenomenon is consistant across the world with all varieties of jellyfish growing in numbers.

    Global Warming Update

Here is the official Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report appointed by the United Nations. It is an 18 page report with scientists from all over the world that have agreed upon the facts about global warming. This is the official global concensus.

On this blog I will be continously documenting reports from around the world of evidence on how global warming is affecting people, animals, and the environment.

Today there are three articles that I have come across affecting China.

First an article that I found yesterday reports that China's winter has been the warmest on record. Historically, the average temperature at this time of year is below freezing, and last Monday a temperature of 60 degrees Farenheit hit the capital. This is nearly 30 degrees difference people, which set records higher than since records even began in 1840!!! The magnolia trees are already blossoming with weather conditions such as these that aren't normally felt until April and people are shedding off their clothes. China admits, their winters have been noticably warmer since the 1980's and acknowledge that global warming is likely the cause. China, of course, blames the West and the more highly developed countries.

2006 for China has experienced some of the most harshest weather conditions ranging from powerful typhoons and droughts that have displaced millions of people over the course of the year. Last year China's rainfall was 90 percent less than usual and the rain that does come down is a 1 in 2 chance of being acid rain, (sulfur dioxide, a by product of burning coal.)In fact 54.4% of all rainfall occuring in 487 major cities in China was acid rain. Coal burning plants supply 70% of China's energy and a new plant was built every three days in 2003. These numbers are growing with China's 1.3 billion growing population with higher demands for energy and a steady GDP rate of over 10%. China's economy is booming with no signs of slowing down, and this means that the people in lower class are moving up to the middle class with more energy and consumer demands. With 300,000 people in China facing drought issues, and no sign of rain to alleviate the drought, China has some important decisions to make to manage the climate change crisis happening right before them.-People's Daily

Opposition to the Real ID act passed in 2005

    Link:News Article

The Real ID Act passed in 2005 by the federal congress, is set to be mandated by 2008. The new law would require that all states nationalize state issued drivers licenses to a central federal database. It would also contain a chip on it with a digital photo and a fingerprint, which would be necessary to board an airplane, enter federal buildings, and even open some bank accounts. The reasons the federal government has enacted this law is to thwart off illegal immigrants obtaining fake id cards and to prevent terrorism.

States are complaining that the cost of new law will be too high, forcing states to upgrade antiquated computer systems to connect to the centralized federal database. Most states oppose the law stating that the new law is not justified to prevent terrorism and say it will only increase the already high rate of identity theft. The state of Maine has already passed a law rejecting the federal mandated law saying it refuses to comply. Other states have now followed with legislation about to pass to do the very same thing. These states include: New Mexico, Georgia, Wyoming, Montana, Vermont, and Washington.

Other states have only recently introduced similar bills, which include: Arizona, Hawaii, Masachusetts, Missouri, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, and Utah.

I urge you fellow bloggers and blog readers to take action against this National ID card if your state has not introduced a bill to reject this new federal law. Write your Senators and Represantives, if the people dont speak out, then the people will never be heard. The ID card is just another way for the federal government to keep tabs on its people...domestic spying is now legal through the Patriot Act and with the new Homeland Security Department.

Exxon Mobil supporting bribes to alter Climate Change Scientists findings

"The American Enterprise Institute, which has received $1.6 million from ExxonMobil, offered scientists up to $10,000 for a 'policy critique' of the U.N. global warming report released on Friday" -Rueters

The American Enterprise Institute is a right-wing think tank that is sponspored by the Oil Industry with very close ties to the Bush Administration. Lets face it, if the Bush Administration honestly admitted that Climate Change was happening, then it would mean spending tax payer dollars trying to eliminate green house gas emmissions. Now lets sit and think about which industry going "GREEN" would affect the most...the oil industry. Global Warming threatens the oil industry because people will want hybrids, electric cars, and will also want wind and solar energy, all of this will cut into the amount of oil that Americans normally consume, which in turn means less profit for companies like Exxon Mobil.

    Speaking of Exxon Mobil,
"After ringing up the biggest annual profit figure in U.S. corporate history in 2005, Exxon Mobil yesterday announced that it topped that number in 2006. Riding the wave of high crude oil and gasoline prices, the company reported a profit of $39.5 billion, up 9 percent from the year before. Its revenue of $377.6 billion exceeded the gross domestic product of all but 25 countries" -Washington Post

This Sort of thing really gets my blood boiling. If you follow the money trails, its obvious that what used to be considered conspiracy is no longer that but is now FACT. Corporations and their multi-billion dollar profits that rival the GDP of ALL but 25 countries in the world are influencing world politics to stay rich and get richer...thats sad people.

So in other words, climate change scientists are being bribed in favor of disproving the global warming debate despite the fact that the United Nations IPCC, or Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released a report last friday stating that global warming is 90% likely caused by man-made carbon emmissions. This is not new of our current administration. In 2001 the Environmental Protections Agency did a report to see how Climate Change was affecting the United States environment and eco-systems, "but after editing by the White House, a long section describing risks from rising global temperatures has been whittled to a few noncommittal paragraphs. The editing eliminated references to many studies concluding that warming is at least partly caused by rising concentrations of smokestack and tail-pipe emissions and could threaten health and ecosystems." -New York Times, click here for article

It is no longer a debate!! Climate change is happening and if you read the news everyday like I do, then you will see the effect on the environment that is changing everyday. Bears aren't going into hibernation, dead zones in the water are growing larger, birds are dying by the thousands and nobody knows why, the arctic sea will soon be completly gone allowing for ships to sail across the north pole for the first time since before the last ice age! This summer, with el nino around, the records are predicted to be off the chart in terms of heat waves and the likes.
