FDA seeks to remove "irradiated" labeling
The FDA is on a rampage to remove more labeling making consumers unaware of the food they are eating. The FDA currently has a policy for food manufacturers to display the international radura symbol and the statement "treated by irradiation" or "treated with radiation" clearly displayed on the packaging of foods that have essentially been nuked with radiation from powerful x-rays and gamma rays to remove bacteria and prolong shelf life. A move like this would be beneficial to food manufacturers and grocery stores, but bad for farmers and consumers.

Speaking your opinions on matters like these to government agencies does work when the people respond in overwhelming numbers. The FDA was forced to extend the amount of time to accept public comments over its controversial announcement of allowing for cloned animal meat to be introduced to the food supply in 2008 without labeling because of the huge response from the public.
Currently, few foods are irradiated. Though several major health and science organizations, such as the World Health Organization and Infectious Diseases Society of America, have endorsed food irradiation as safe, US consumers have been slow to warm to irradiated foods.
