Aspartame's Safety Questioned Again: Equal and Nutrasweet

Italian researchers who previously suggested the artificial sweetener (made by Searle/Monsanto, the FDA's best buddies) heightens the risk of cancer are saying it again, based on a new study they did. The FDA not surprisingly disagrees. The study shows that in rats, there are significant increases in cancer. Oh but the FDA, my favorite government agency is doing what it does best and protecting the corporations and screwing over the American people. There are huge amounts of counter studies done on humans that show no sign of a link between the artificial sweetener and cancer, but some say more studies still need to be conducted to make sure. Another question one might need to ask is, who is funding these counter studies? I for one would rather not have any artificial sweeteners in my body, especially when the scientist that developed it accidentally discovered it when he was trying to make an insecticide. So here a is a little research on Aspartame thanks to Rich Murray.

"Aspartame is an artificial sweetener consumed by hundreds of millions of people worldwide. It is used in over 6,000 diet products including soft drinks, chewing gum, candy, desserts, yogurt as well as in pharmaceuticals, in particular, syrups and antibiotics for children."

aspartame (methanol, formaldehyde)

Dr. Morando Soffritti of the European Ramazzini Foundation and a study group in Spain called Trocho et al, suspects that the carcinogenic nature comes from the conversion of molecules into formaldehyde. One liter of diet soda, about 3 12-oz cans, gives 61.5 mg methanol, so if 30% is turned into formaldehyde, the formaldehyde dose of 18.5 mg is 37 times the recent EPA limit of 0.5 mg per liter daily drinking water for a 10-kg child.

Upon ingestion, aspartame breaks down into several residual chemicals, including aspartic acid, phenylalanine, methanol, and further breakdown products including formaldehyde and formic acid. - Wikipedia

EPA fact sheet for Formaldehyde

So essentially what we have are clues that this substance might be harmful. So why would anyone bother taking the risk in the first place? Why do people gamble with their health and trust a corrupt government agency when there is counter evidence to suggest that the Nutrasweet and Equal are cancerous?

The precautionary principal is what should take precedence in this situation. Avoid artificial sweeteners, and be healthy. End of story.

Great of you to study and talk about the environment. More discussion (and even more action) is always needed.

I've researched aspartame and its dubious effects 2 years ago.

So many scary-ass things out there!

cheers to you
