Australia bans Incandescent bulbs to curb Global Warming!

incandescent light bulb

Australia will be the first in the world to ban incandescent bulbs in an effort to curb Global Warming through energy efficiency. This is the most proactive solution that I have heard yet. The government in the United States should follow the AU’s action on this one. The bulbs are to be phased out over three years, allowing everyone to purchase new energy efficient bulbs, fluorescents, or environmental LED lighting. This is an overall benefit for everyone as it will reduce 800,000 tons of carbon dioxide in a year for Australia and will reduce household lighting costs by 66%.

Incandescent light bulbs waste an exorbitant amount of energy. Incandescents bulbs create light by emitting heat. They are an old technology that should be put to rest. Now that the world has realized that energy efficiency is important because it wise not think that energy is infinite, governments around the globe can begin to enact laws such as the one Australia has boldly moved forward with.

Discussions among colleagues, peers, and family have only just begun that will help people raise their awareness about energy use. People have to pay their electricity bills every month. Empowering people to analyze and audit their energy use is what is needed in order to get people to use less energy. Everything from switching light bulbs, to turning down the thermostat, to demanding energy efficient appliances from manufacturers is what it will take to reduce our electricity bills, thus total energy demand. This will have the benefit of putting less demand on the environment, and we will know we at least did our small part.
